The talent in distance running in the Golden State is not slowing down. We have had multiple individual standouts and nationally ranked teams in the past, but it seems like ever since former coach of Newbury Park HS, Sean Brosnan, verbally reset the standard for high school distance running, we have seen an upward trend of fitness and achievements from athletes.
On the girls side, we see a lot of young talent creeping up the ranks as there are three sophomores all ranked in the Top 5 of this list. Jaelyn Williams (Eastlake HS) and Chiara Dailey (La Jolla HS) have both been in competition with each other since day one of high school, both stem from the San Diego Section.
So far, a total of seventy-three girls have all broken the five minute barrier, and a total of twelve have gone under the 4:50-minute mark. Let it be known that we still have roughly about three weeks left in the season, more opportunities to see these marks drop even further.
