When looking at the finalist at last year's state meet, we see that the amount of athletes in this event is more or less equally divided between graduates and returners.
Take a look at who we have atop the list yet again. Aja Johnson, the junior who is also the top returner in the shot put. Johnson is the only girl to return with a throw over 150, she placed fourth at last year's CIF-State Championships. Behind Johnson, there are four other girls who competed in the finals at the State Championships last season who will be returning to the field.
McKay Madsen of Clovis North HS is leading the boys back into this season. He's the only returner to have thrown over 190, and is followed closely by Derek Smith of Buchanan HS. Madsen and Smith finished second and third respectively at the CIF-State Championships last season, but Smith took the competition even further when he finished fifth at the Nike Outdoor Nationals a few weeks after the state meet.
