2021 Senior Boys MileSplitCA All-State Cross Country Team

The 2021 MileSplitCA All-State Senior Boys Cross Country Team is a subjective team based on results from the CIF-State Championships within the class and overall, with consideration to leaders of top teams, and section divisional results.

FIRST TEAM


ZACHARY AYERS (Davis/SJ)


Ranked third in the class and sixth overall at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 14:55.60 for fifth place in the Division I race and the first non-Newbury Park boy across the line. Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1 champion, running the 5K Willow Hills course in 15:28.60. Won the D1-D2 Individual Sweepstakes race at Mt. SAC (14:56.60). Won Varsity race at De La Salle (14:59.00). Ran 5K PR of 14:53.10 on the William Jessup University course to win league. Top-10 qualifier at Eastbay West Regional on the 5K Mt. CADEN CARNEY (Tamalpais/NC)


CIF-State Division III champion, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:04.60, which ranked sixth in the class and 10th overall at the meet. North Coast Section Division 3 champion, running the 3-mile Hayward HS course in 15:01.00 to beat Maria Carrillo senior Jacob Donohue by 18 seconds. That was a 69-second improvement from 2019 when he placed 25th as a sophomore. Ran 3-mile PR of 14:29.00 at Woodbridge, which ranked 10th in the class at that meet. (Patrick Corsinita photo)


JAI DAWSON (Dana Hills/SS)


CIF-State Division II champion, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:19.10. CIF-Southern Section Division 2 champion, running the Mt. SAC course in 14:55.20. Only the second boy in school history to win both. Won five of his seven races, including his race at Mt. SAC (15:17.20), Orange County Championships Sweepstakes (15:07.10), and the Division 2 race at Mt. Carmel with the second-fastest time of the day behind only Kenan Pala (15:39.10). COLIN SAHLMAN (Newbury Park/SS)


The unquestioned top runner in the nation, regardless of class. Won the CIF-State Division I individual title running the 5K Woodward Park course in Fresno in 14:26.50, the second-fastest time ever on that course the fastest ever in the D-I race, and the second-fastest ever by a senior boy in the history of the State Meet, which dates to 1987. Led Newbury Park to a 1-4 finish and meet records for points (16) and team time (73:25). Garmin RunningLane National Championship individual winner while leading Newbury Park to a 1-3 finish and the national team title. His winning time on the flat and fast course in Huntsville, Alabama of 14:03.29 ranked U.S. No. 1 for 5K. Led an unprecedented 1-6 finish at the Southern Section Division 1 championship, running the new Mt. SAC course in 14:52.60. His winning time at Clovis on the 5K Woodward Park course of 14:29.40 ranked as the No. 3 performer all-time on that course before he and teammates Leo Young and Lex Young rewrote that all-time list at the State Meet. ALEX MADER (Lick Wilmerding/NC)


Ranked fourth in the class at the State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 14:56.30 to place second in the Division V championship behind future college teammate at Yale, Kenan Pala. His time ranked seventh overall at State and CA No. 7 in 5K races contested during the CIF season. Among his four wins was the North Coast Section Division 5 title in 15:14.30 while leading his team to the title. College: Yale. (Patrick Corsinita photo)


KENAN PALA (Francis Parker/SD)


Won the CIF-State Division V title in a division record time of 14:51.00, breaking the previous standard by eight seconds. His time ranked No. 2 in the class at the State Meet. Placed second at the Eastbay National Finals, running the 5K Morley Field course in 15:14.80. Placed second at Eastbay West Regional qualifying, running the 5K Mt. SAC course in 15:13.00. Won a second consecutive San Diego Section D-5 title, running the 3-mile Morley Field course in 14:22.30 while leading his team to a fourth consecutive title. MAX SANNES (Big Bear/SS)


CIF-State Division IV champion, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:00.50, which ranked fifth in the class and ninth overall at the meet. Southern Section Division 4 champion, running the Mt. SAC course in 15:11.40. Won seven races and placed second to Kenan Pala at Mt. SAC (14:48.30). Ranked fourth in the class at Woodbridge, 14:24.50, his 3-mile PR. Top-10 qualifier at Eastbay West Regional on the 5K Mt. SAC course and competed as a member of the West team at Eastbay National Finals in San Diego. College: Air Force. (Patrick Corsinita photo)

SECOND TEAM 


Daniel Appleford (Newbury Park/SS) -- Ranked eighth in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:11.50 for seventh in the Division I race in helping Newbury Park to the team championship and meet records for points (16) and team time (73:25). Placed fifth in the Southern Section Division 1 Final in 14:59.5 as part of an unprecedented 1-6 finish as the Panthers won the title. Ran No. 5 as Newbury Park won the Garmin RunningLane National title. 

Aidan Dimick (Carlmont/CC) -- Ranked 11th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:14.70 for eighth in the Division I race. Central Coast Section Division I champion, running the Crystal Springs course in 14:58.90. Among five wins: Bellarmine Terry Ward 5K at Baylands (15:37.80), the 1A race at Clovis (15:27.50).

Conor Gibson (West Torrance/SS) -- Ranked ninth in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:12.90 for second in the Division III race in leading West Torrance to the title. Bryce Gilmore (Sage Creek/SD) -- Ranked seventh in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:08.60 for second in the Division IV race. San Diego Section Division 4 champion, running the Morley Field course in 14:56.40. Won four of seven races, including a 3-mile PR and meet record at Dana Hills (14:13.00). College: Wake Forest. 

Isaiah Givens (Pasadena/SS) -- Ranked 12th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:15.30 for third in the Division III race. Southern Section Division 3 champion, running the Mt. SAC course in 14:48.2. Won four of his eight races, including a 3-mile PR at Cool Breeze in Pasadena (14:08.10). Ran 5K PR for third at Desert Twilight (15:00.20). College: Colorado

Jared Steins (Servite/SS) -- Ranked 13th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:15.50 for fourth in the Division III race. Southern Section Division 3 runner-up to Isaiah Givens, running the Mt. SAC course in 14:56.4. 

Mark Trammell (Santa Fe Christian/SD) -- Ranked ninth in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:12.90 for third in the Division V race. Placed second to Kenan Pala in the D-5 race at the San Diego Section Finals (15:00.00). Top-10 qualifier at Eastbay West Regional on the 5K Mt. SAC course and competed as a member of the West team at Eastbay National Finals in San Diego. College: Wake Forest.

THIRD TEAM


Alex Bobowski (Santa Fe Christian/SD) -- Ranked 17th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:17.40 for sixth in the Division V race as his team placed second. Placed third in D-5 at the San Diego Section final (15:09.40) behind Kenan Pala and Mark Trammel. College: UC Davis.

Christopher Chavez (St. John Bosco/SS) -- Ranked 15th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:16.10 for fifth in the Division III race. Placed fifth in the Southern Section D-3 race (15:14.3).

Chris Coles (Claremont/SS) -- Ranked 20th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:23.20 for third in the Division II race. Placed third in the D-2 race at the Southern Section Final (15:03.50). Won the D1-D2 Sweepstakes at Mt. SAC in 14:56.90, the fifth-fastest time at the meet.

Adin Dibble (Sonora/SJ) -- Ranked 22nd in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:24.30 for fourth in the Division IV race. Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 champion, running the Willow Hills course in 15:41.20, second-fastest overall at the meet. Ran 5K PR of 15:10.30 for ninth in the Sweepstakes race at Clovis. Ethan Godsey (Agoura/SS) -- Ranked 16th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:16.70 for sixth in the Division III race. Placed sixth in the Southern Section D-3 race (15:14.9).

Michael Julian (The York School/CC) -- Ranked 19th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:22.20 for fifth in the Division V race. Central Coast Section Division 5 champion for the second time in as many seasons, running the Crystal Springs course in a division-record time of 15:15.40). College: UC San Diego.

Braden King (Jesuit/SJ) -- Ranked 14th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:15.70 for 10th in the Division I race. Runner-up in D-1 at the Sac-Joaquin Section final (15:48.30) in leading Jesuit to the team title. College: Yale.

FOURTH TEAM 


Mario Giannini (Chico/NS) -- Ranked 23rd in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in a PR time of 15:24.90 for eighth in the Division III race. Winner of seven races including a second consecutive Northern Section title in 15:29.18, the third-fastest time in the history of the NS Championship course used since 1992. (DeAnna Turner photo)

Oscar Gomez (De La Salle/NC) -- Ranked 27th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in a PR time of 15:30.50 for fifth in the Division II race. Placed third in the NCS D-3 Final, running the Hayward HS 3-mile course in 15:25.20.

Will Kirk (Palos Verdes/SS) -- Ranked 25th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in a PR time of 15:28.40 for ninth in the Division III race. Placed third in the D-3 race at the Southern Section Final (15:00.60).

Emmanuel Leblond (Mountain View/CC) -- Ranked 24th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:28.10 for 12th in the Division I race. Placed second in the D-1 race at the Central Coast Section Final (15:10.10). 

Nate Osborn (High Tech-SD/SD) -- Ranked 28th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:30.90 for fifth in the Division IV race. Placed second in the D-4 race at the San Diego Section Final, running the Morley Field course in 15:38.30.

Tommy Rogers (Junipero Serra/CC) -- Ranked 26th in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in 15:28.80 for fourth in the Division II race. Central Coast Section Division 2 champion, running the Crystal Springs course in 15:38.30. 

Luke Stefanou (Palos Verdes/SS) -- Ranked 21st in the class at the CIF-State Meet, running the 5K Woodward Park course in a PR time of 15:23.80 for seventh in the Division III race. Placed eighth in the D-3 race at the Southern Section Final (15:21.90).
