SJS Section Finals - Preview

Division 1 Girls

Davis and Oak Ridge have been swapping section titles for years, and this season's no exception. They've gone back and forth with wins all year, and come Saturday, both should roll out fully healthy lineups for another thriller. Their top 7 runners stack up evenly, and every single one has cracked sub-19 for 3 miles at the Sierra Foothill League finals. Davis rides the momentum of Norah Feldt and Avery Wolk, who've shaken off early-season hiccups and are running with serious swagger. Oak Ridge counters with senior Adriana Ingargiola, who's already locked in her spot at UC Berkeley next fall.

The third state-qualifying ticket should punch through to Turlock, powered by sophomore standout Ellison Williams. Pleasant Grove is the only crew with a real shot to knock them off-they ran a smart, controlled tempo with their top 4 at sub-sections. Even if they manage to slide past Turlock's 2-through-5, they'll still need their #5 to have an absolute lights-out day.

At sub-sections, Oak Ridge and Davis snagged 9 of the top 10 spots, so the five individual state berths will be a dogfight. Brianna Williams from Cosumnes Oaks and any one of Pleasant Grove's top four have a possibility.

Division 1 Boys

Last year's Division 1 race was anything but typical. The field wasn't very deep, with Davis crushing it by 50 points over runner-up Oak Ridge-who peaked at the right time but still got outclassed. This year? Totally different ballgame. Oak Ridge brings back their entire top 5, including seniors Roman Zamora, Thomas Capelli, and Wesley Ewing. They stack up nicely against Davis' top 3: defending champ sophomore Elias Thronson, plus seniors Zev Fox and Nicolas Duquette. These two squads have been trading wins all season, and both played it smart at Subsections-resting key guys or just doing tempo runs.

The third state-qualifying spot should land with McClatchy, powered by juniors Hugh Heyer and Landon Warriner. They were looking unstoppable at last year's section finals... until one of their top runners tripped on the finger loop and cost them a State berth. Turlock snuck in instead. McClatchy's only real weak spot is the drop-off to their 6th guy, so fingers crossed their top 5 keep an eye on their feet this time.

Turlock and Folsom are long shots-they haven't beaten Davis, Oak Ridge, or McClatchy once all season. Turlock's got Larson Wejmar and Zayn Hamilton leading the charge (both top-10 at Subsections), while Folsom leans on Parker Whitemyer and James Ing but has been hit hard by injuries. Either way, both need their #5 runner to show up big.

Individually? Davis sat Elias Thronson at Subsections, but he's the clear favorite. Other guys fighting for state spots include Oliver Charkiewicz from River City and Daniel Barajas from Tokay.

Division 2 Girls

You could make a case that the Division 2 boy's race has the deepest field--loaded with national and state-ranked teams--but the girl's side is absolutely stacked with deep squads and a ton of runners already locked into college programs.

Whitney rolls in with Sophie Hutchinson leading the charge, after resting at subsections, will be ready to push the pace alongside Natalie Arriaza from Patterson, who loves going strong from the gun. Whitney's has tremendous backup too--seniors Jane Landon, Nina Soto, and Addison Ewers and a state title is very much on the table. Vacaville's been getting better every week, powered by Khloe Delatorre and Makayla Galvan. Their one weakness though they drop off quite a bit after their top 5.

Golden Valley's anchored by Fernanda Cortes, brings solid depth, and has been steady all season. Bella Vista should lock down that final 4th state team spot after dominating at CVC league finals. They're led by Zoe Corder and the steadily improving Sophia Pham.

Granite Bay's got a late start but is trending up, with Madeleine Olson out front. Vista Del Lago leans on Brenna Mannion and, despite some recent team struggles, should be primed to fight for that 4th qualifying spot.

Individually? This is the toughest race to punch a state berth. Pretty much every team mentioned has legit contenders, and they'll all be scrapping with Lena Llamas from Buhach Colony and Avery Carlson from Pitman.

The college commits in this field are wild: Jane Landon to CBU, Brenna Mannion, Addison Ewers, and Nina Soto to Cal Poly SLO, Zoe Corder and Sophie Hutchinson to Washington State, Lena Llamas to Wingate University, Avery Carlson to UC San Diego, and Natalie Arriaza going locally to Stanislaus State.

Division 2 Boys

Jesuit's been dominating and can win even if one or two guys have a bad day. They're led by SFL individual champ Connor Bilodeau. Vacaville's having a monster year and it wouldn't shock anyone if they join Jesuit on the podium at state. Junior Cooper Stream's leading the charge. Bella Vista hasn't secured a state team berth in years, but this year's squad is the best they have had in a while, with junior Calvin Fear out front. Both Vacaville and Bella Vista are young and loaded, so they'll be gunning for Jesuit's crown once the Marauders graduate their stacked senior class. The last team ticket to state? It's a three-way battle between Vista Del Lago, led by Theodore Beavers, a deep Atwater team, and Whitney, led by Joshua Landon and Davis Little.

Individually, the section title's probably coming down to Cooper Stream or any of Jesuit's top four. But guys battling for those state individual spots include Jace Campos and Giovanni Mejia from Pacheco, Joshua Landon from Whitney, Calvin Fear and Lincoln Manweiler from Bella Vista, and Anthony Cunha from Woodcreek. Also, college signings have happened on the boy's side as well as Kyle Jakary will be running at Cal Poly SLO while Drake Hoferer will join UCLA next fall.

Division 3 Girls

St. Francis won't be challenged until the State Meet, where they'll tangle with Southern California powerhouses for the state title. They ran a very patient race at subsections after placing fourth as a team at SFL finals. Coach Worthen will want a clean, confidence-building run at Willow Hills.

Freshman star Alyssa Gutierrez has been racking up big wins--including the SFL individual crown--and she's the clear favorite to grab the section title. The last two state team berths? That's a showdown between Oakdale, Beyer, and Elk Grove. All three have the depth and firepower, but it'll hinge on how well their #4 and #5 runners do. Top individual state qualifiers to watch: sisters Emmy and Sadi Angelo from Ponderosa. St. Francis will take most of the top spots, but don't sleep on standout runners from Nevada Union, Sierra, and Twelve Bridges to also join the other Division 3 girls qualifiers.

Division 3 Boys

Ponderosa deserves a top-10 state ranking after crushing the CVC League title and posting killer times at subsections last week. Their 1-2-3 punch--Grady Morris, Braden Himley, and Devin Maldonado--is as strong as anyone in the section. They'll get to flex on the whole state in a couple weeks at Woodward Park. For now, they need their #4 and #5 guys to keep building the momentum at Willow Hills.

Oakdale's has Sean Muturi up front, and Coach Moreno always has his team ready to peak at Willow Hills and snag another state berth. Del Oro is led by Ethan Kelly and Beyer has Hayes Terry, and both teams will be monitoring each other to make a move on the soggy Folsom course. Andres Lomeli from Kimball (headed to Cal Poly SLO) and Peter Kendall from Twelve Bridges (Chico State bound) are the frontrunners for those individual state-qualifying spots.

Division 5 Girls

Defending champion Vacaville Christian had it pretty easy last year when they secured the section title, but after last week's narrow loss 51-49 to Westlake Charter, it will come down to each team's 5th runner to figure out who will be this year's champion. Although both teams should feel pretty confident to secure one of the two state qualifying spots, the individual qualifying spots are up for grabs.

Vacaville Christian's sophomore Josephine Krulick ran spectacularly last week at Sub-sections with the only sub 19 minute race and finished a full minute ahead of John Adams' senior Ava Eryomenko. Krulick should be a top-10 contender at the state meet. Keilana Rivas of Sacramento Adventist, Emma-Lynn Hogan of Central Catholic, and Summerville's Payton Snavely and Jocelyn Lloyd could also secure a state qualifying berth as long as they can finish in the top 12 individuals.

          Division 5 Boys

Bret Harte is the defending team champion, where last year the top four squads were crammed within 30 points. This year, the Central Catholic and Summerville squads are the strongest teams after last week's subsection results in Frogtown. While the Bears and Raiders finished 1-2, the race will come down to whose 3-4-5 runners are the strongest. Any slips would allow either Woodland Christian or Bradshaw Christian to snag the second state berth awarded to the Division 5 boys. As the boys emerge from the Varsity loop at Willow Hills for the second time, the final half mile around pond will determine who will be heading to the state championships.

Summerville's Esai Vasquez is the defending individual champion, but Millennium sophomore David Avila is the runaway favorite after a blistering season, dominance in league meets, and win at last week's subsection meet. Other runners contending for individual state qualifying spots include Frederick Fawver and Matteo Colacchi of Argonaut, Nuno Pereira of Woodland Christian and Joel Edison of Westlake Charter.
