MEETS ON TAP 2022 Stanford Track & Field Invitational

SATURDAY RUNNING EVENTS

1600 (Girls & Boys)
Girls (Meet Record: McKenna Brown, La Costa Canyon (SD), 4:47.61 '18)
Boys (Meet Record: Liam Anderson, Redwood (NC), 4:13.49 '19)
It's typical for the Stanford Invitational to host out-of-state competitors who come to the meet to test themselves against stiff competition. Ella Borsheim from Bellarmine in Washington is one such competitor and she comes to Palo Alto as the favorite in this event. She will definitely have competition from freshman upstart, Hanne Thomsen of Montgomery who rolled to a 4:49.02 time at the Dublin Distance Fiesta. Ashlyn Boothby of Scotts Valley and Elizabeth Fetter of Palo Alto will do their best to hang on to the front duo.

The favorite to win the boys' race is Scotts Valley senior, Jeremy Kain. He has established new personal bests in the 800 and 3200 this season and seems primed to dip under the 4:10 mark in this race. His main competition should come from fellow CCS runner Harrison Dance of Saratoga who won the K-Bell Invitational earlier this season and has a lifetime best time of 4:12.26.

4 x 100m. Relay (Girls and Boys)
Girls (Meet Record: James Logan (NC), 46.23 '03)
Boys (Meet Record: Long Beach Poly (SS) 41.03, '98)

The 400m. relay will contest trials starting at 11am. They will narrow the field down to the 9 finalists.

With trials being contested in the morning, there is no guarantee that all the top teams advance without any mishaps in those trials. That being said, it appears that there are three teams ahead of the field with all those teams all dipping under the 49 second mark so far this season. The Lynbrook girls ran 48.65 to win the Firebird Relays while the Silver Creek girls ran 48.89 in a dual meet vs Leland. Oak Ridge is the other team with a sub 49 second time as they rolled to a 48.92 time at the Thunder Invitational.

Rocklin has the fastest entry time but has not hit all cylinders so far this season. They do feature outstanding sprinter Nathan Kent and will be a contender for a top finish. They will be challenged by McClymonds who have already rolled to a 41.88 season-best. Simi Valley will be making the long trip up north and have a best of 42.41. The other team in contention will be the Acalanes boys who have run 42.41 and hope to join the already mentioned teams in the afternoon final.

800m. (Girls and Boys)
Girls (Meet Record: Allie Schadler, Rio Rico, Arizona, 2:10.11 '16)
Boys (Meet Record: Connor Dunne, San Clemente (SS), 1:50.53 '16)

In the past, the boys' 800m has outshined the girls' race with more depth but this may not be the case this Saturday. Leading the way should be British Columbia runner, Maya Baechler. She has a best of 2:09.51 which she set in June of 2021 at The Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic. Keeping her honest and perhaps also challenging the meet record will be Ella Borsheim of Bellarmine, Ashlee Gallegos of JSerra, Samira Kennedy of Castilleja Georgia Jeanneret also of JSerra.

The clear favorite to win this event is El Camino senior Yutaka Roberts (Jose Carlos Fajardo photo above). He has proven to be a determined racer the past two years with multiple individual section titles in 2020. He has a season-best of 1:51.95 at the Cal All-Comers meet as a victory at the Dublin Distance Fiesta. His closest competitor will be Scotts Valley's Jeremy Kain who ran a lifetime best time of 1:53.83 at the K-Bell Invitational and seems to be on a roll this spring.

400 Meters (Girls and Boys)
Girls (Meet Record: Kaylah Robinson, El Cerrito (NC), 54.09 '17)
Boys (Meet Record: (tie) Tim Brown, McClymonds (OK) '97;
Max Glasser, Marin Catholic (NC) '18, both 47.31)
Monte Vista Cate Peters rolled to an impressive-looking 800m victory at the Dublin Distance Fiesta and will be looking to add an individual title in this event at this meet. Her closest challenger appears to be Harker sophomore Anjali Yella who just recorded a personal best time of 56.79 at the Firebird Relays as she chased Mountain View freshman Hannah Rutherford who recorded a 56.04 personal best time. Rutherford will be competing in the 100m at this meet.

Rocklin's Nathan Kent has the fastest lifetime best time at 47.47 which he accomplished last season. Orange Lutheran's Jaylen Lynch has already run 48.84 and will attempt to keep Kent honest. The same goes for Bryce Thomas of Moreau Catholic who has posted a speedy 49.13 so far this season. Yutaka Roberts of El Camino will be in the fast heat as well trying to hone his speed in order to repeat as the CCS champion in this event this season.

Girls 100m. Hurdles/Boys 110m. Hurdles
Girls (Meet Record: Trinity Wilson, St. Mary's College (NC), 13.41 '12)
Boys (Meet Record: Jamar Marshall, St. Mary's-Stockton (SJ), 13.61 '17)
The hurdle race for both girls will have two hurdlers are clearly a step ahead of the rest of the field.
Giselle Kirchner of Rocklin is the clear favorite as she has already rolled to a 14.49 best. The only hurdler that will be within striking distance is Silver Creek senior Chika Nwachukwa who had an undefeated season in this event last track season and has already recorded a best of 14.93 a few weeks ago at the K-Bell Invitational.

For the boys, St. Mary's Stockton hurdler Jadyn Marshall is the class of the field. There is no question that he will win and win by a large margin. The meet record is certainly one that draws his attention as it belongs to his older brother Jamar. He won a nail-biter at the Texas Relays with a winning time of 13.35 which now stands as the leading time in the nation over the high barriers this spring.

100 Meters (Girls and Boys)
Girls (Meet Record: Ashton Purvis, St. Elizabeth (NC), 11.50 '07)
Boys (Meet Record: Deondre Batson, Laguna Creek (SJ), 10.44 '10)
The favorite to win this event will be Santa Catalina junior Juliette Kosmont. She matched her lifetime best time of 12.17 earlier this season at the Avis Kelley Invitational and will be seeking to win her first section title later this spring. Mountain View freshman Hannah Rutherford will be sharpening her speed in this event and shouldn't be overlooked. The same goes for hurdler Chika Nwachukwa of Silver Creek.

For the boys, Simi Valley junior Jaelon Barbarin has already recorded a lightning-quick 10.37 this season although there was a healthy tailwind to boost his time. Ian People of Franklin Elk recorded a wind-legal 10.61 at the Sac State HS Classic and will look to test Barbarin on a neutral track in Northern California.

4 x 400m. Relays (Girls and Boys)
Girls (Meet Record: Kennedy-Granada Hills (SS), 3:44.4y '81)
Boys (Meet Record: Berkeley (NC) 3:14.0y '81)
Four teams appear to have a shot at nearing the 4 minute mark and perhaps dip under. Those teams are Los Altos and
Los Gatos from CCS, Foothill from NCS and Rocklin from the SJS. Those four teams should be safely in the lead and will hope to each give their anchors a great shot at the victory and a potential sub 4 effort.

While writing this preview, I realized that I was mentioning Rocklin quite a bit and here I am again. Rocklin will be the clear favorite to win this event and they may finish with a healthy margin of victory. Provided they can get the baton to Nathan Kent anywhere near the lead and that is all folks. Serra HS will try to post a fast time here to let the rest of the section know that they can still compete quite well in this event.
