CIF-State Meet Preview: What You Need To Know

BOYS

There are three boys looking to defend titles, Matt Strangio (Jesuit/SJ) in Division I, Nico Young (Newbury Park/SS) in Division II and Anthony Grover (JSerra/SS) in Division IV. Grover is going after a third consecutive division title and would be only the fourth in the history of the State Meet if he is able to do it.

In the team competition, Great Oak (SS) in Division I, Newbury Park (SS) in Division II, Laguna Beach (SS) in Division IV and St. Margaret's (SS) in Division V are the defending champions. The 2018 team champion in Division III, Ridgeview (CS) is not in Division II. Great Oak is going after a sixth consecutive Division I title and is the top-ranked team in the U.S. Newbury Park, going after a second consecutive title in Division II, is ranked No. 2 in the U.S.

Other storylines to watch among the boys:

  • How fast will Nico Young run? The Newbury Park senior, considered the top runner in the country, went 14:28.90 on this course Oct. 12, setting a record for the Clovis Invitational. Earlier this year he ran 13:39.70 for 3 miles on the Woodbridge Invitational course at SilverLakes in Norco, setting a national record. Last week at the Southern Section Finals on the flat 3-mile Riverside City Course, he obliterated his previous meet record, running 13:54.10. Knowing the Nike Cross National Championship is a week away and his strongest competition here may just be from senior teammate Jace Aschbrenner, just how hard will he go?
  • Can Jackson Adelman win in Division V? Adelman, a junior at St. Margaret's in San Juan Capistrano, is a two-time Southern Section champion who was second to now-graduated Andre Williams (Sonoma) as a sophomore. While Adelman is the top returner from last year's State Final, he was third on the Woodward Park course in the Small Schools race at the Clovis Invitational. College Prep (NC) senior Jacob Lehmann-Duke was almost six seconds faster. Francis Parker (SD) sophomore Kenan Pala is coming off a section title victory on the Morley Field course and could also challenge Adelman for first across the line.
