Athletes threw down impressive performances on one of the first big Saturdays of cross country competition across the nation.
Great Oak (SS) senior Logan Carter made up two position spots over the final split to win the Division 1-2 Varsity Boys race at the Cool Breeze Invitational at Pomona Fairplex. Carter ran 15:42.2 over the new 3-mile layout to beat teammate Michael Rodriguez (15:42.2) and Spencer Handorf of Villa Park (SS) who ran 15:45.6.Great Oak runners placed 1-2-4-5-6 to score 18 points and win the division team title. Kai Marotta (15:52.6), Jack Paradise (15:56.0), and Jacob Brown (16:02.0) also scored for the Wolfpack.
Abreham McGrath and Victor Rangel, a pair of juniors from Agoura (SS), placed first and second in the 1.5-mile JV Boys race on a hot evening at the Cool Breeze Invitational at Pomona Fairplex. McGrath covered the cross country layout in 7:52.7 with Rangel next across the line in 8:00.3.Senior Jayson Bluemel placed third in 8:04.6 to lead the division team champion Anaheim Canyon.
Great Oak second-year coach Tammy Draughon's team won all four varsity division titles at the Cool Breeze Invitational at Pomona Fairplex. The Wolfpack won both Division 1-2 Varsity division races, and both Sundown Showdown elite races.
Sonora senior Alexandro Vielma made up two position spots over the final split to win the Division 3-4-5 Varsity Boys race at the Cool Breeze Invitational at Pomona Fairplex. Vielma ran the 3-mile course in the 15:28.7 to beat Francisco Rodriguez of Franklin (LA), who ran the course in 15:35.3, and Diego Urdiales of Damien (SS) who crossed in 15:48.5.
Rylee Blade, a sophomore at Corona Santiago (SS) won the elite Sundown Showdown race on a hot Saturday night at the Pomona Fairplex. Blade made up one position spot over the final split to win the 3-mile race in 17:13.5, holding off La Canada (SS) sophomore Maya DeBrouwer, who made a strong late charge but fell just short, making up eight position spots over the final split to cross in 17:14.8. Shadow Hills (SS) senior Marjourie Lopez placed third in 17:17.9.
Running her first race for new school Calabasas, junior Arielle McKenzie won the Varsity Girls Division 3-4-5 event at the Cool Breeze Invitational. McKenzie covered the 3-mile course in 18:09.0 to beat Yorba Linda (SS) senior Sydney Rome (18:20.5) and Sonora (SS0 senior Tigist Bergman (18:26.8).
Highland (SS) senior Matthew Donis ran 14:36.8 over the 3-mile course to win the Cool Breeze Invitational on a hot Saturday night at Pomona Fairplex. Cathedral (SS) junior Emmanuel Hernandez placed second in 14:50.4, with West Ranch (SS) senior Bille Issa third in 14:52.0.
