The 2014 Orange County Championships bring together some of the best teams and individuals in the state. Last year over 150 national elites came from this competition. While it is not a qualifier for the southern section or state championships, the OC Championships serves as an important building block before the post season.
Week #8 is highlighted by the Orange County Championships. Curtis Godin (pictured) brings his Mater Dei team into the competition that kicks off the championship season.
According to PrepCalTrack.com editor Rich Gonzalez, Moore unleashed the best all-conditions long jump by anyone west of Texas since 1989 - a wind-aided leap of 25 feet, 10 inches - while winning the Mt. Los Gatos' Greta Wagner distinguished herself in the CCS Top 8 Track and Field Classic at San Jose City College on Friday by tying for the 100-meter title with Menlo School-Atherton standout Maddy Price (11.94 seconds, no wind information). Cal-Hi Sports named Pinewood-Los Altos Hills' Doc Scheppler as its state overall Coach of the Year, and Monte Vista-Danville's Nick Jones as its Division I boys Coach of the Year. Eight former athletes and a coach are among the 10 S.F. Prep Hall of Fame inductees who will be honored at a dinner May 17 at the Spanish Cultural Center. Three-time Super Bowl participant and Denver Broncos first-round pick Steve Sewell (Riordan, 1977-81) headlines the list. Two Washington athletes - Norman Owyoung Jang (basketball, 1956-59) and Michele McMahon (softball, 2002-06) - are also among the honorees, along with Walt Arnold (Sacred Heart, football, 1953-57), Paul Fortier (St. Ignatius, basketball, 1979-82), Dave McCall (Mission, basketball, 1974-77), Ron Whitaker (Wilson, track and field, 1970-73) and Gene Womack (Poly, basketball, 1954-57). Defending North Coast Section boys volleyball champion Deer Valley-Antioch (27-1) won the Falcon Invitational on Saturday with a 25-15, 20-25, 15-13 win over host Foothill-Pleasanton behind 18 kills from Jordan Ewert and 39 assists by Jacob Evans. ... After cruising through 600 meters in 1:31, Blake Haney settled into pace for an easy victory in the 1600 at Buchanan's West Coast Relays.
With four girls at 5:10 or better for 1600 meters, the depth of the Davis High School girls is matched by few in the state this year.
Week #6 could be called the "Opening Act" as the competition gets more serious at mid season. Trabuco, West Coast, and Stanford have strong draws in each of their regions as many have their minds on Arcadia that starts in 7 days.
