By now, Nico Young's record-breaking 3000 meters effort has been well covered by our Jeffrey Parenti which you can check out here at Nico Young Shatters 3K Indoor Record at Millrose Games. What may have been overlooked is that Nico also surpassed several other marks en route to his record time of 7:56.97.

We reached out to High School Track and Field historian Jack Shepard and according to Mr. Shepard, Nico actually set FOUR HS records yesterday. The first is the obvious one as he became the second HSer to dip under the 8-minute mark indoors by surpassing the old mark of 7:59.33 set in 2016 by Drew Hunter of Loudoun Valley.

That mark is also faster than the outdoor 3000 meters record of 7:59.83 set in 2008 by Riverbank senior German Fernandez. That would be record number TWO.

Nico also passed the 2000 meters mark at 5:17.89 which is faster than Drew Hunter's indoor best of 5:19.57 which he also recorded en route to his indoor 3k mark in 2016. Record number THREE.

The HS outdoor 2000 meters mark of 5:18.5 was set by US Olympian and Central Catholic senior Galen Rupp in 2004 en route to his then outdoor mark for the 3000 meters at 8:03.67. That would be Nico's FOURTH record in his successful pursuit of Drew Hunter's former indoor mark.

An exciting time for California Track and Field as Young will pursue other records during the outdoor season including the national 3200m record at the Arcadia Invitational. The current 2-mile record of 8:29.46 was set in 2011 by Lukas Verzbicas of Sandburg and that time converts to approximately 8:26.6 for 3200 meters. Stay tuned for our continued coverage.
