The boys at Newbury Park won the CIF-State Division II championship and went on to place sixth at Nike Cross Nationals last cross country season.
The team is led by two standout seniors, Jace Aschbrenner and Nico Young. Aschbrenner, slowed by injuries as a junior, is one of the top seniors in the state. Young, who, as a junior won the D-II individual title at State, placed fourth at NXN, and won the 3200m on the track, is one of the nation's elite boys distance runners.
This workout was filmed in late August at Peppertree Park just down the street from Newbury Park High School. The course was set up for 1K in a long horseshoe. The workout for Aschbrenner and Young is 7x1K with three minutes rest. Much of the rest is the walk across the park from the finish to the start. Young averaged 2:48, hitting 2:47 on the second and third reps and 2:48 on the other five. Aschbrenner averaged 2:51 and was consistently just behind Young throughout.
Other members of Coach Sean Brosnan's boys and girls teams ran either 6x1K or 5x1K, depending on their level. This Workout Wednesday video focuses on the varsity boys, specifically on Aschbrenner and Young. Other varsity boys in the video include Colin Sahlman, Nick Goldstein, Tommy McDonnell and Matthew Siroky.
