Girls Jumps / Pole Vault
With Upland looking to steal the show as a team, senior Chelsea Daye has emerged as the favorite after her 18-10 effort two weekends ago. She just took to the event this Spring and it has obviously paid dividends. Teammate Kennedy Smith has also measured out over the 18-6 tape. Smith is a two-time CIF Qualifier a league champion. Meanwhile, another duo shines with this one hailing from Redondo. Senior Akaylah Hill comes in with an 18-5 best while junior Mahkaia Lee's 17-9 was her personal best. But, in the end, the quartet from Carson is looking to steal the spotlight. Seniors Jonan Young, Jaylen Walker, junior Indiah Turner to go along with sophomore Jourdan Murphy are the deepest group of jumpers in all of California. Young was the California Winter Championships champ (19-4.75) in the Long Jump last month after placing 9th at last year's state meet. Carson took the top four places at last year's LA City Section Championships as Walker was also a state meet qualifier. Woodbridge's Simran Malhotra will also be seeking her first 18-foot effort in this affair. Not to be outdone in the Triple Jump, Carson also took the top four spots at their sectional finals in 2017! A three-time state meet qualifier, Young is also the defending section champ (39-2.25) here. Redondo's Mahkaia Lee will come back to challenge for the win after measuring out over 37 feet two weeks ago. Upland sophomore Kerrington Smith was the Baseline League runner-up in 2017 while bounding out beyond 36 feet on several occasions. One of the best from the San Diego Section is University City senior Elena Andree. Just missing the 18-foot threshold in 2017, she was SD sectional finals qualifier in all three years she has competed.
Moving over to the verticals, with the Pole Vault, Redondo junior Amari Turner is in a class by herself her. A state meet qualifier in 2017, Turner has shown great improvement in elevating up over the 12-6 bar, which moves her up to #5 in California and amongst the top 15 in the nation. Chaffey sophomore Brenda Willmore and Trabuco Hills' senior Hayley Gardner are looking to clear 11 feet here. Showing tremendous improvement in a short time, Woodbridge junior Madison Wong has elevated over 10-6 the past two weekends. The High Jump includes twelve girls that have cleared the five foot bar. Trabuco Hills junior Hanna Bevan elevated over 5-1 last weekend while our favorite here is Woodbridge junior Emily Garner. After claiming the Div. II Title, Garner (5-6 personal best) moved onto taking the Southern Section Masters Meet en route to a 5th place finish at the 2017 California state meet. Garner is currently #6 in California.
