Sections are allotted a number of automatic team qualifiers for the CIF-State Championships. The total may vary by division and by gender per section. The small Oakland and San Francisco sections are allotted just one team qualifier per gender. The Northern Section is allotted team qualifiers in only Divisions III-V. Section team qualifier allotments are noted below in charts under each section final header.
Individuals, not on qualifying teams, may qualify for the State Meet by placing among the top runners in their section finals. That placing requirement is dependent on the number of teams allotted for qualification per section per division per gender. For example, of there is only one automatic team qualifier allotted, an individual not on that qualifying team must place among the top eight to advance. If the section is allotted two team qualifiers, the individual must place among the top 12. Up to five individuals per division not on qualifying teams may advance to the State Championships. The chart below breaks down the placing requirement.
