TASTY RACE: CA Winter Champs Boys 1500m

MILESPLITCA WEEKLY TASTY RACE VIDEO

This week's Tasty Race feature samples the 1500-meter run from the California Winter Championships Track and Field meet held Saturday, January 29 at Arcadia High School.

In this race, Justin Pretre, a junior from The Menlo School (CC) emerged from a tight pack to pull away down the stretch to earn the title, running 3:58.99. He is the only one among 32 runners across three sections to run sub-4 minutes for this distance.

(NOTE: All athletes compete unattached during the winter track season. School affiliations are noted here for identification purposes.)

Four other boys in the third and fastest of the three sections ran sub-4:01:

- Lance Denhalter (Vista Murrieta/SS/Sr.) 4:00.43

- Justin Singer (Cypress/SS/Sr.) 4:00.70

- Carson Smith (Great Oak/SS/Sr.) 4:00.91

- Ramses Cortes (Great Oak/SS/Jr.) 4:00.97

Two others in the featured race went under 4:05:

- John Sesteaga (Glendora/SS/Sr.) 4:03.72

- Landon Pretre (Menlo/CC/Fr.) 4:04.50

Later in the meet, the Pretre brothers teamed with senior Nik Khuntia and junior Aiden Deffner to win the Distance Medley Relay (12-4-8-16) with Justin anchoring to a winning time of 10:43.86.

After the DMR, Pretre said he could feel the fatigue from the two races.

"I'm a bit tired from that," he said. "It was kind of a hard race and the 15 takes a lot out of your legs. And having to do a 16 right after it is a bit tough but it's about that grind mentality, I guess."
