Future Stars: Who Should We Keep An Eye On This October?
By Edgar Salazar | MileSplit California
Elias Barraza - Claremont (SS)
Elias Barraza has put together an impressive early chapter to his 2026 cross country season, emerging as one of Claremont's young runners to watch. Barraza opened the season with a solid 15:18.9 at the Cool Breeze Invitational over three miles, followed by a 14:51.50, and most recently a strong 15:57.50 5K at the Desert Twilight XC Festival. That performance showed the freshman's ability to quickly adapt to the longer cross country distance while maintaining a composed race structure. With Claremont developing a deep pack behind its front runners, Barraza's continued progression could be an important piece of the team's season as championship racing approaches.
Sterling White - Oaks Christian (SS)
Sterling White entered 2026 with plenty of expectations after establishing himself as one of California's most promising young distance runners. His 2026 track campaign only raised the ceiling, highlighted by 4:15.41 at the Brooks PR Invitational for the full mile and 8:59.26 for 3200 meters. The sophomore from Oaks Christian opened his 2026 campaign with a 14:04.00 three-mile PR at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic followed by a 15:00.40 in the 5K at the Desert Twilight XC Festival. As one of the state's highly regarded young talents, White will be a name to watch whenever he toes the line this fall.
Sofia Wroblewski - Yorba Linda (SS)
Sofia Wroblewski is continuing to build momentum as one of the most intriguing young distance runners in California. The Class of 2030 standout has already shown serious range, posting 4:57.72 for 1600 meters and 10:44.89 for 3200 meters during the 2026 track season. She carried that momentum into cross country with an incredible 16:30.00 in mid-September. Yorba Linda's freshman ace, Wroblewski has the tools to make significant noise as the 2026 season progresses.
Addyson Johns - Santiago-Corona (SS)
Addyson Johns has wasted no time making her presence felt in 2026. After running 17:43.50 for 5K as a freshman, Johns took a massive leap forward at this year's Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, clocking 15:59.50 for three miles and finishing third in the Sweepstakes race. The performance was more than two minutes faster than her previous Woodbridge mark and immediately put her among the nation's fastest sophomore girls as well as Santiago-Corona's top runner. Johns' breakout XC performance follows an equally impressive track season, where she lowered her PRs to 5:00.03 for 1600 and 10:32.62 for 3200. With that kind of progression already under her belt, Johns has quickly become one of the most exciting young runners to follow in California this fall.
Emily Zapata - Matilda Torres (CS)
Emily Zapata has quickly become one of the young names to watch on Matilda Torres' emerging girls team. The Class of 2030 clocked a 17:14.80 5K at the Kim Duyst Twilight Cross Country Invitational before setting her three-mile best of 16:52.50 at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic. That steady progression across the opening weeks of the season has given Matilda Torres another developing front-runner to build around. With Zapata continuing to gain experience against stronger competition, her progression could be one of the more interesting storylines to follow for the remainder of the season.
