What's Happening This Weekend in California?
Palos Verdes Invitational - October 2
The Palos Verdes Invitational returns this Friday, October 2, bringing together high school programs from across Southern California. The meet allows teams to race on the challenging Palos Verdes course as the season moves into October, with both varsity and lower-level runners competing.
The Palos Verdes Invitational should provide an interesting early-October test on the Sea Kings' home course. Palos Verdes enters with a strong local group led by Lucas Nulman, who has already run 14:19.00 over the 3-mile distance this season, along with teammate Kai Schoenfeld, also a sub-15:00 minute 3-miler after his P.R at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic. On the visiting side, Loyola is a team worth watching with five runners comfortably under 16:00 minutes and a sixth runner at 15:57.2 for the 3-mile distance.
46th Annual Mt. Carmel Sundevil Invitational - October 3
The 46th Annual Mt. Carmel Sundevil/ASICS Cross Country Invitational will take place Saturday, October 3, at Morley Field in San Diego's Balboa Park. One of San Diego's marquee invitationals, the meet features grade-level races for freshmen through seniors, along with a Div. I and Div. II Senior/Invitational race for both boys and girls. Over 70 schools are set to compete in the 2026 edition, making this one of the weekend's largest meets.
The individual-based format makes this one particularly interesting to follow because the strongest runners from different schools are separated into grade-level races before the Senior/Invitational race. San Diego-area powers such as Mt. Carmel, Torrey Pines, Poway, and other CIF-San Diego Section programs will provide the team depth. At the same time, the top individual runners competing in the Sweepstakes races will be the athletes to watch most closely. Keep an eye out for out-of-section visitors San Clemente and Glendora, both teams that have made the prestigious NXN meet at some point within the previous three cross country seasons.
2nd Annual Bulldog Invitational - October 3
The 2nd Annual Bulldog Invitational will be held at the Willow Hills Reservoir Course in Folsom on Saturday, October 3.
The Bulldog Invitational has filled its field, setting up a strong Sacramento-area matchup at Willow Hills Reservoir. Vista del Lago's Rocco Jerwers is seeded at 15:50.2 for 5K, while Del Oro's Ethan Kelly, Pleasant Grove's Cruz Solis, and Davis' Elias Thronson are also among the leading seeds. That gives the boys' race a particularly interesting individual battle while the team competition should showcase several of the Sacramento area's established programs. The top team coming into this meet is arguably Jesuit, but of course, anything can happen out there come race day.
Central Park Invitational - October 3
The Central Park Invitational returns to Huntington Beach Central Park on Saturday, October 3, featuring a packed schedule of varsity, JV, sophomore and freshman races along with boys and girls Sweepstakes races. The meet will be by far the largest invitational not only in Southern California, but across the Golden State this weekend.
The Central Park Invitational has the deepest overall field of the four meets, with well over 100 schools currently entered. Powerhouse names like Redondo Union, West Torrance, Wilson (Long Beach), Woodbridge, Beckman, Hart, JSerra Catholic, Sage Creek, Santa Margarita, Trabuco Hills, and Newbury Park are among the larger and more notable programs entered, while individual standouts will also have an opportunity to go up against some of California's best during the Sweepstakes races. The meet will feature a good mix of schools across all divisions along with a few out-of-section teams and one or two out-of-state programs.
