San Diego Section XC Championships Preview

GIRLS

DIVISION I

Canyon Crest is looking stronger and stronger as the season progresses, jumping to No. 5 in the state.  Rancho Bernardo won here a year ago but isn't as deep.  Individually, Carlie Dorostkar won by almost a minute a year ago but if Rancho Bernardo's Jacey Farmer and Ashley Learn come ready to run, they could provide a push. DIVISION II

La Costa Canyon ran away with this race a year ago but while the Mavericks are still the team to beat, ranked No. 10 in the state, don't forget about Poway and Scripps Ranch. Steele Canyon's girls were impressive in the Grossmont Championships. This individual race is wide open with LCC's duo of Kyra Compton and Sydney Weaber the top two returnees. DIVISION III

With transfer Trang Woolridge now completely melded into Cathedral Catholic's already strong team, the Dons -- third a year ago -- are the front-runners. El Capitan, the defending champions, would not be dismissed, however. Individually, Mission Vista's Bella Longo won a year ago and is the favorite to repeat. However, Woolridge and El Capitan freshman Amber Chase, the Grossmont champion, figure to provide the push. (Bella Longo photo by DeAnna Turner)

DIVISION IV

Two words-Sage Creek.  The defending state champions are even stronger than a year ago when they scored just 30 points. The Wallace sisters, senior Skyler and soph Stormy, are back after going 1-2 in 2018 and are joined by Lavanya Pandy, who has had a terrific season. Freshman Malia Leupold gave Sage a 1-2-3-4 finish in the Avo East. Ramona's Amy Brown should be in the mix for a top five finish. (Sage Creek girls team photo by Michelle Cox)

DIVISION V

While not as strong as a year ago, defending champion Santa Fe Christian remains the team to beat. Bishop's and Del Lago loom. Individually, Christian's Alaina Zamorano is looking to defend her section title against SFC's Eloise Martensen, the Coastal champ, Del Lago junior Natalia Jimenez , SFC freshman Revere Schmidt and Bishop's Madeline Cramer, who was third a year ago.
