The 5 Toughest CA Girls State Records

300-hurdles

Only two runners in the history of U.S. high school track and field have dipped under 40-seconds in this event -- Long Beach Wilson's Lashinda Demus and New Jersey's Sydney McLaughlin. Demus ran 39.98 and held the national record for 16 years until McLaughlin scorched a 38.90 in 2017.

For those who were not around in 2001, the story is a bit more complex than winning two straight titles before the 2001 season. No one came even close to Demus that year and in the Southern Section Masters Meet, she became the only runner to leave 40 seconds in her wake.

Although she was part of a then-national record 4x400 relay team the next week, Demus crashed in the 300-meter hurdles.  She would go on to win Olympic silver in the 2012 Olympic Games.
