Central Coast Section Championship Preview

1600 Meters
Girls CCS Meet Record: Anna Maxwell San Lorenzo Valley 4:42.57 2013
Boys CCS Meet Record: Mark Stillman Willow Glen 4:08.7 1977
Girls At-Large Mark: 4:56.02
Boys At-Large Mark: 4:14.73

The 1600 has been one of the better events for this section at the state level. Santa Cruz senior Mari Friedman will be attempting a very unusual triple by running all three distance races. This will be her first event and she should win here ahead of her league rival Marea Zlatunich. I believe she will run just hard enough to win trying to save her energy for her other three races (1600 relay as well). The race for third should be between Rebecca Hasser of Homestead and Anaya Ward of Santa Cruz.

The favorite to win the boys' race is Bellarmine senior Alex Scales (Malcolm Slaney photo) who is the defending section champion. This will not be easy. He will have plenty of competition in his hands with Colton Colonna of St. Francis and Jorge Estrella of Andrew Hill. 800 meter state finalists in 2017, Ryan Wilson of Carlmont, will be focused on this race and could win this race. Jason Gomez of Westmont has been running really well and should be a factor as well. Bellarmine freshman Colin Peattie keeps lowering his PR every race which is at 4:16.95 now. Willow Glen senior Zach Walker could be a wild card in this field and proved himself by winning the CCS Top 8 meet.
