Central Coast Section (CCS) Top 8 Meet Preview

Girls Long Jump
Meet Record: Elzunia Wojcicka San Benito Hollister 20'3.25"

Boys Long Jump
Meet Record: Paul Bradford Carlmont 23'10" 1992/Derek Jones Alvarez 23'10" 2001

Silver Creek will be one of the teams pursuing a section team title later this season. The long jump could be a big event for them as they could potentially take the top two spots. Among the leading horizontal jumpers in the section, Silver Creek teammates Jazlynn Shearer and Arianna Fisher (file photo above) are among the best. They will be looking for the clean sweep here provided they finish ahead of San Benito's Annie Breger and Live Oak freshman Karlie Lema. An interesting competitor in this field is Santa Catalina senior Laurel Wong who is also the best pole vaulter in the section. For the boys, the clear favorite is St. Ignatius senior Alex Enos. Earlier this season, he flew to a best of 24'2.5" which puts him right up there with the best jumpers in the state as well as a strong candidate to break the meet record here from 2001.

Girls Triple Jump
Meet Record: Wendy Brown Woodside 42'11" 1984

Boys Triple Jump
Meet Record: Larry Weldon Silver Creek 48'1.75"

This event has been consistently strong for this section. I know I sound like a broken record but the two Silver Creek athletes mentioned above (Arianna Fisher and Jazlynn Shearer) will be favored here to win. They have each surpassed 40 feet this season and will be competing over who will bring the first place medal. The only athlete that can keep them honest is Leigh senior Hawa Kamara who has a best of 39'5". For the boys, Los Altos senior Max Molchanov will be the favorite here. The interesting competitor is Parker McDonald of Serra who could give his teams some very valuable points as they continue to pursue fellow league-mate Bellarmine for that elusive section team title.

Girls High Jump
Meet Record: Chi Johnson Menlo Atherton 5'9" 1990

Boys High Jump
Meet Record: Jeff Rogers Overfelt 7'3" 1985

If there is one pick to make for a sure fire victory, St. Ignatius senior Delaney Peranich could be your choice. She has cleared 5'7" this season at a league meet and is at least 5 inches better than all the next best jumpers. Once you get past her, it will be very difficult to pick out the next best jumpers. There are seven jumpers that have all cleared 5'2" this season and we will have a better idea of who are the state meet contenders are after this meet. For the boys, Serra junior Parker McDonald had a breakthrough performance at last year's CCS meet to qualify for his first state meet. Among some of his competitors are Los Gatos junior Oliver Aristil who has a best of 6'4" this season and is now coached by the best high jump coach in the section, John Rembao.

Girls Pole Vault
Meet Record: Toni Anthony Castilleja 13'8" 2007

Boys Pole Vault
Meet Record: Nico Weiler Los Gatos 17'0.75" 2008

The best female vaulter in the section for the past two years has been Laurel Wong of Santa Catalina who recorded her season best of 13'1" at the King City Invitational. Isabella Grant is the other 13 foot pole vaulter in the competition and with both being juniors, this should be a very fun rivalry for the next two years. On the boys' side, the best pole vaulter is Gilroy senior Logan Flores. He narrowly missed qualifying for the state meet last year and will be looking to establish himself as the favorite before we head into May. A fun fact about Gilroy HS, their wrestling team has won 16 section titles in a row and just recently hired MMA fighter Daniel Cormier as their next wrestling coach.

Girls Shot Put
Meet Record: Elena Bruckner Valley Christian SJ 52'10" 2016

Boys Shot Put
Meet Record: Fred Houston Willow Glen 60'1.5" 1984

The two best shot putters (female and male) both train together daily. Notre Dame Belmont junior Krissy Smooth (Nhat V. Meyer photo) has a best of 41'6" and did qualify to the CA state track meet last year. Since NDB does not have a track, Smooth throws daily at the Serra track with the best thrower on the boys' side, Elijah Folau (53'4"). Smooth will have two worthy opponents in Mills junior Nane Ikahihifo who has a best of 41'0" and Santa Clara's Grace Wills (40'11").

Girls Discus
Meet Record: Elena Bruckner Valley Christian SJ 186'10" 2016

Boys Discus
Meet Record: John Wirth Leland 199'0" 1988

If there are two meet records that are very safe, it would be the two you see here in this event. It will take an enormous lift from a very friendly headwind to supply an enormous personal record for a competitor in both fields. On the girls' side, Krissy Smooth (142'2") of Notre Dame Belmont will try to make it a clean sweep with a victory in the discus as well as the shot put. Her closest pursuer is Mills junior Nane Ikahihifo (133'8.5"). For the boys, three throwers have surpassed 150 feet with Silver Creek's Brandon Dang (155'0"), Mills' Michael Skyriotis (154'5") and Los Gatos's Laurence Atkinson (151'8"). Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the work of Mills throws coach Pat Lewis who has consistently coached state qualifying throwers at both Mills and Jefferson. Definitely one of the best throws coaches in the state.
