CIF-State Championships: 10 Storylines To Watch

2. Record Assault: Only three CA records, that we see, all on the boys side, could fall this weekend.

  • Senior Sondre Guttormsen (Davis) broke the CA record in the pole vault at the Arcadia Invitational when he cleared 18-2.50. (The State Meet record if 17-3.) The Norwegian national junior record holder ranks only US #4. Expect him to push his current record, and national ranking, higher.
  • Sean Lee (Trabuco Hills) has made attempts at the CA record in the high jump but has yet to clear at least 7-4.50, a mark held by two jumpers. He's tied for US #1 at 7-3 in a season where his stated objective is to set records. He has six meets with a 7-foot clearance or higher. (The State Meet record if 7-3.25 by Lee Balkin of Glendale in 1979, the oldest meet record on the books.)
  • Asani Hampton (Yucaipa) missed equaling the CA record in the 100m by 1/100th when he ran 10.26 in legal wind at the Sunbelt League Finals. If his hamstring holds out, in this field, Henry Thomas' 1985 mark of 10.25 could fall. (The Meet Record is 10.30. Javelin Guidry (Vista Murrieta) won the 100m title last June in a windy-10.13, an all-conditions CA best.)
