'22 CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW - San Diego Section

XC 2022 CLOSER LOOK - SAN DIEGO SECTION

Coming off a season in which there were two individual state champions and a team runner-up, one might think this could be a banner year for the San Diego Section.

Maybe, but the losses are many and this isn't a section that raises eyebrows even in the best of conditions.

The coaches decided to give themselves a week off between the section finals and state championships this year, but they will tell you it wasn't to try to get an edge as much as a move that will free up thousands of runners to try out for the schools' winter sports teams.

The section championships used to fall on the weekend of tryouts, so many winter programs weren't sure who they'd have or not.

Many coaches -- and runners -- in the past have wondered if an extra week off would help like it does the runners from everywhere but the West in the EastBay National Cross Country Championships. Now they'll find out.
