FUTURE STARS Week 10 Frosh-Soph Track and Field Standouts

FUTURE STARS

* * *

This weekly feature is designed to put a spotlight on freshmen and sophomores who are making an impact across the state.

No one in this category has made an impact this outdoor season in CA, and nationally, as has Ventura (SS) freshman distance phenom Sadie Engelhardt.

The brilliant and affable 15-year-old has consistently made headlines each time she has taken the line throughout the spring. In her most recent jaw-dropping performance, Engelhardt put up a solo 3200-meter time for the ages -- 9:50.69 -- Friday night at Moorpark HS, host of the Ventura County Championships.

Engelhardt's time ranks No. 3 all-time in CA, is among the fastest ever nationally, and further lowers her national class record. She continues to be the national class leader at 800m (2:05.66), 1600m (4:34.79), and 1 mile (4:35.16), ranking U.S. No. 2 overall at all three distances.

Her 3200 time ranks U.S. No. 1 overall, ahead of Texas star and cross country runner of the year Natalie Cook, who slots second at 9:52.45.

Just imagine what Engelhardt might be able to accomplish if challenged in a race? That is something we hope to see as the CIF post-season evolves in May.

Below is a quick look at boys and girls who impacted the top of the rankings at invitationals this past weekend, and we put a closer spotlight on four Frosh/Soph athletes on the pages below.

NOTE: Rankings are subject to change as more meet results are added to the database in CA as well as nationally.
