4x100 Relay

If you were around in 1999, you got to see the fastest short relay team ever. The Long Beach Poly foursome of Bennie Robinson, Samie Parker, Darrell Rideaux and Kareem Kelly posted the fastest time in state history, 40.14 (equal to No. 14 in U.S. prep history). Poly edged out the 1989 Hawthorne team that clocked a 40.24. San Diego's University City (40.66 in 1998) was the fastest of the CA All-Stars teams. Score: SS 5, All-Stars 0.

A sub-4 minute miler, Chula Vista's Tim Danielson (3:58.1 converted from a 3:59.4 mile in 1966), leads the charge with Alameda St. Joseph Notre Dame's Cooper Teare (3:58.76 in 2017) topping Brea-Olinda's Austin Tamagno (3:59.65 in 2016) for third. Score: AS 8, SS 1. Running score: AS 8, SS 6.

110 Hurdles

Stockton St. Mary's Jamar Marshall (13.22 in 2019) surely is one of the biggest losers from the coronavirus as he never had a chance to improve on his state record or challenge the national record that he came so close to last summer. Marshall wins this event over Upland's Joseph Anderson (13.33 in 2017) and Agoura's Johnathan Cabral (13.36 in 2011). James Logan's Kevin Craddock (13.39 in 2004) just missed. Score: AS 5, SS 4. High Jump

You must have cleared more than 7-4 just to score here. San Jose Mt. Pleasant's Darius Carbin (7-4.50 in 2016) and San Francisco Balboa's Maurice Crumby (7-4.50 in 1983) are tied at the top ahead of Chico's Teak Wilburn (7-4.25 in 2002). Camarillo's Jeremy Fisher (7-4 in 1994) is the first SS placer. Score: AS 9, SS 0. Running score: AS 22, SS 10.

The 100 through the 400 are Southern Section strengths as exhibited here where Hawthorne's Henry Thomas (45.09 in 1985, which still stands as the state record), Pasadena Muir's Obea Moore (45.14 in 1995) and Vista Murrieta's Michael Norman (45.19 in 2015) deliver a sweep of their own. Score: SS 9, AS 0. Running score: AS 22, SS 19.

One of the things about a dual meet on paper is athletes can enter multiple events. Thomas would never be able to come right back but he can here and his 10.25 in 1985 (wind-legal CA record) leads to another 1-2-3 for the SS with Yucaipa's Asani Hampton (10.26 in 2018) and Vista Murrieta's Michael Norman (10.27 completing the sweep. Next up was Compton's Ricky Carrigan (10.29 in 1991) anyway. Score: SS 9, AS 0. Running score: SS 28, AS 22.

Long Jump

The heat of the San Joaquin Valley produces two torrid jumpers where Tulare's James Stallworth (26-4.75 in 1989) and McClatchy's Ken Duncan (26-2.25 in 1972) top the SS duo of Muir's Jerry Proctor (26-0.75 in 1967) and Pasadena's Joe Richardson (26-0.75 in 1984). Score: AS 8, SS 1. Running score: AS 30, SS 29.

Only one runner in state history has dipped below 1:47 and that's Bell Gardens' tall, powerful Michael Granville (1:46.45 in 1996). Next up were the North Coast duo of Berkeley's Pete Richardson (1:47.31 in 1981) and El Cerrito's Dale Scott (1:47.9 in 1972). Score: SS 5, AS 4. Running score: AS 34, SS 34.

Pole Vault

Davis' Sondre Guttormsen (18-10.25 in 2018) was everything he was advertised to be as he dazzled anyone who watched him perform. Santa Barbara San Marcos' Brandon Richards (18-2 in 1985) was the only other vaulter to soar over 18 feet (18-2 in 1985) with Acalanes' Brent Burns (17-8.50 in 1987) solid in third. Score: AS 6, SS 3. Running score: AS 40, SS 37.

300 Hurdles

Those who watched Riverside La Sierra's Reggie Wyatt (35.02 in 2009) were certain he'd crack 35 by the end of the season. Smooth, powerful and fast, he was too much for Woodland Hills Taft's Jeshua Anderson (35.28 in 2007) and Lompoc Cabrillo's George Porter (35.32 in 1985). Score: SS 6, AS 3. Running score: AS 43, SS 43.

Shot Put

With an almost 5-foot edge, it wouldn't be difficult to say Fallbrook's Brent Noon (76-2 in 1990) was the most dominant of the field event performers. St. John Bosco's Matt Katnik (72-3 in 2015) and Liberty's Daniel Viveros (71-3 in 2019) were two of only four 70-footers in state history. Score: AS 6, SS 3. Running score: AS 49, SS 46.

Remember what we noted about the sprinters? Vista Murrieta's Michael Norman (20.14 in 2016) knew no peers and he leads a 1-2 SS finish with Long Beach Poly's Bryshon Nellum (20.43 in 2007) a few steps back. Taft's Quincy Watts (20.50 in 1987) places third for the CA All-Stars to avert a sweep. Score: SS 8, AS 1. Running score: SS 54, AS 50.

Discus Throw

Clovis' Jonah Wilson (221-5 in 2017) captures this event but the SS grabs second and third behind Huntington Beach's Scott Moser (213-11 in 1997) and Newport Harbor's Bo Taylor (213-7 in 2006). Score: AS 5, SS 4. Running score: SS 58, AS 55.

In what has become a pattern, CA All-Star German Fernandez (8:31.42 in 2008) of Riverbank finishes first but much-needed backup points fail to materialize as Burbank's Jeff Nelson (8:33.4 in 1979) and Newbury Park's Nico Young (8:40.00 in 2019) grab the next two spots as the Southern Section hangs on to its narrow lead. (Does anyone doubt Young might have moved up here had he run this spring?) Score: AS 5, SS 4. Running score: SS 62, AS 60.

Triple Jump

Seven of the top 10 triple jumpers in state history are from CA All-Star sections but the Pasadena-based pair of PHS' Joe Richardson (53-6.50 in 1984) and Muir's Charles Mayfield (52-10.50 in 1980) top San Joaquin Memorial's Dave Tucker (52-6.25 in 1980) for a 1-2 finish, giving the SS the virtual meet victory!! Score: SS 8, AS 1. Running score: SS 70, AS 61.

4x400 Relay

The Henry Thomas-led Hawthorne team in 1985 roared to a 3:07.40 to complete the victory with Berkeley's 1981 club (3:08.94) the closest of the All-Star teams. Score: SS 5, AS 0.
