CIF State Meet Preview: Distance Running Events

1600 Meters

The 2018 field in the girls' 1600m was one of the strongest in state meet history. How strong was it? For the 2018 season, the "at-large" time for the 1600m was 4:56.02. This year's "at-large" mark? 4:52.84! Last year's final included four very talented seniors but the top six times from last week's section finals all are returning state meet finalists. The fastest time (4:45.04) recorded last week belonged to Mayfield's talented sophomore, Audrey Suarez (photo above courtesy of Kirby Lee/Image of Sport), who finished in 5th place at last year's state meet. She finished ahead of Great Oak senior Fatima Cortes (above to the left) at the SS Masters meet and should be considered as a slight favorite at this point. Healdsburg's Gabrielle Peterson ran a solo 4:48.54 to win the NCS Meet of Champions. Sophomores Jacqueline Duarte of Chino Hills and Mia Barnett of Village Christian finished behind Cortes and will be factors in the final. Buchanan's Meagen Lowe has had an impressive senior season including winning the Mt. SAC Invitational mile and will be competing for the last time on her home track.

Redwood senior Liam Anderson (Clark Kranz photo) finished in 4th place as a sophomore in this event and was the state champion last year. He comes into the meet undefeated in the 1600m and mile and during the fall, Anderson was the national XC runner of the year following his NXN individual victory. He will be favored to win for the 2nd year in a row but it won't be easy. Southern Section Masters champ Peter Herold has had a terrific senior year and will come into the meet with lots of confidence. Colin Peattie of Bellarmine took charge of the CCS race early and recorded the fastest time ever recorded by a sophomore in the section. Jesuit junior Matt Strangio won the 2018 3200m state title and has chosen to double this year. He has proven to be a big late-season competitor and will definitely be a factor. Arroyo senior Noah Hibbard has posted the fastest 1600 and mile times this season from the APU Distance Meet of Champions. He finished 2nd to Herold at the SS Masters meet and will be looking for a win here. Dublin junior Christopher Middleton-Pearson has run 4:10.82 and will be extra motivated after his 4th place finish at the NCS MOC in the 3200m.
