The 2018 runner-up in this event, Golden Valley's Shyann Franklin gets into the ring with a 47-11.5 best.  This places her atop the California rankings and third in the United States.   Mission Viejo is looking for serious points in the throws behind the talent of Ava Butterbaugh (44-10) and Danielle Lister (41-2).  They are second and fifth, respectively on the season.  Butterbaugh was sixth here a year ago, and is currently third in the section and eighth in California with that top performance.  Trying to distract the Diablos from those points is Calabasas' Tierra Crockrell.  With a background in the Heptathlon, she uncorked a two-foot personal best last weekend (41-7.75) to move her to sixth in the section.  Also stepping up last week with a new personal best, Ramona's Prentice Burris advanced to the finals once again with a 42-4 effort.   Not to be left out, Elsinore's Soley Lymon's 39-10 elevated her to ninth in the section.  This moved her up to fifth in the section.  Six of the top nine in the Southern Section compete here.

Discus
A Division 2 qualifier the past two seasons, the relative unknown Amanda Spear of Thousand Oaks is one of the most improved girls in California.  With a 110-11 personal best coming into 2019, she uncorked a 145-2 effort at the divisional prelims last weekend, moving her up to third in the Southern Section.  That was the fourth straight meet with an improvement.  Meanwhile, Shyann Franklin (pictured) steps into the ring with a 140-0 seasonal best which is the seventh best in the section.  The Mission Viejo duo of Danielle Lister and Ava Butterbaugh of Mission Viejo have both got out over 132 feet this season.  Lister is currently eighth in the section.  The pair are a big reason for being favored to win the team title as Mission Viejo projects to score 30 points in the field events.  Last, and seeking a possible spot to the Masters Meet, Elsinore's Leneah Olsingch stepped with a 129-2 seasonal best at the prelims.

High Jump
Two of the top four in the Southern Section will battle for the Division 2 title.  Victoria Plummer of Moorpark was the 2018 runner-up while Bonita's Jocelyn Hipwell was fourth.  They have both cleared 5-8 this season.   Coming over for a break from the Pole Vault, Paige Sommers of Westlake has cleared 5-5 along with Capistrano Valley's Jolie Robinson.   Both are tied for eighth in the section and projected to advance to next weekend.  Woodbridge's Madison Lyon achieved the rare feat of advancing in four individual events as she has elevated up over the 5-4 bar along with Moorpark's Quynh Gedney (sixth at the 2018 finals).

Pole Vault
Westlake's Paige Sommers is a strong a favorite in this event as you will find on the day.  Capturing the title last year as a freshman, she has improved to a 13-6, which is the top girl in the Southern Section.  As she placed third at the 2018 State Meet, she is second in California right now along with being tied for fifth in the United States.  Not much separates the rest of the field, led by Seanne Chan of Thousand Oaks.  She was sixth in this competition last year as replicating her 11-9 seasonal best could qualify here onto the Masters Meet.  Peninsula's Gabrielle Pack has cleared 11-8 while Mission Viejo is looking to gather more points through the talent of Jenny Kroeger.  She has soared over the 11-6 bar this season and was ninth a year ago.  Finally, seventh in the 2018 competition, Layne Hayward of South Torrance has also cleared 11-6 in 2019.
Long Jump
Calabasas' Jade McDonald is the favorite to claim this one after taking the runner-up spot a year ago.  She soared to a wind-aided 19-8.25 effort back in April and bring a wind-legal best of 18-9.25 (fourth in the section).  Her former teammate, Sophia Chiaramonte of Mater Dei comes in with a best of 18-7.5 when she captured the Trinity League title.  This is seventh in the section of all competitors remaining as she seeks to return to the form that saw her qualify for the California State Meet.  Coming on strong, Simi Valley's Jordyn Brown has a wind-aided best of 18-11 and has measured out to 18-1.75 for wind-legal marks.  She is projected to advance onto the Masters Meet.  Seventh at the Division 1 Finals in 2018, Woodbridge's Madison Lyon will begin her busy day here.  She has produced an 18-4.5 best while her teammate, Phoebe Ladd looks to improve upon her 17-3 wind-legal best.

Triple Jump
Woodbridge's Madison Lyon (Steve Pisano photo) gets onto the runway with a season's best of 40-3.  This is second in the Southern Section after coming off a tenth place finish at 2018 State Meet. She was runner-up in Division 1 a year ago as well.  The Division 2 runner-up in 2018 also seeks the title in the form of Jade McDonald of Calabasas.   With a 39-3.25 season best, she is currently fifth in the section and looking to help her squad stay as close as possible in the team title battle.  Capistrano Valley's Jolie Robinson was seventh in this competition last year.  She is one of the section's best with a 38-6.5 best.  Taking sixth place last year, Serrano's Natalie Lin joins the group with a 38-1.5 effort in 2019.  Silverado's Kayla Ramirez and Mater Dei's Jaycee Mahlum look to keep up with these four, which are all projected to advance to the Masters Meet next weekend.
