New Beginnings for State Championship Coach

Chris Calvin, who led the girls team at Gardena Serra to Southern Section Division 4 and CIF State track and field titles last spring and was named 2018 MileSplitCA Girls Coach of the Year, has left his alma mater for St. John Bosco.

Calvin made the announcement over the weekend in a post on social media that he was leaving for the all-boys school in Bellflower, 14 miles east of Serra.

He prefaced his post with "New beginnings and new opportunities"

"As an alumnus, Serra will always be home for me!" Calvin's post on Twitter began. "There were countless memories along the way while helping develop young men and women academically in the classroom and athletically on the field of competition. One thing is certain, and no one can ever question, that I gave my absolute ALL during my 5 year tenure!"

Calvin was a math and science teacher as well as a football coach at Serra. He will teach science at SJB.

Last spring, the Serra girls track team won the Southern Section Division 4 title, ending a four-year run by Oaks Christian, after being runners-up to Oaks in 2017. Two weeks later, Calvin's girls came back to win the State team title, despite not having an individual champion and with only one event victory.

There was only one senior among the six girls who contributed to the State title, including star sprinter Jazmyne Frosta first team MileSplitCA All-State selection who had a hand in 32 of the team's winning total of 36 points.

James Robertson is expected to take over at Serra, Calvin said.

"I am extremely excited for my new opportunity to grow professionally as an educator, mentor, and coach with the St. John Bosco Braves!" Calvin wrote.

"This next leg of my journey will never change the love that I have for my former students and athletes. I want to thank the Bosco administration for this great opportunity. I look forward to joining the Bosco family as I am anxious to create new memories while mentoring the next great generation of young men in whatever capacity I can!"
