The quartet entered the relay after an already grueling day of competition, during which all four had qualified individually for the CIF State Championships. Most notably, they all qualified for the open 400m in dominant fashion, finishing 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th. Sanaiah Varnado also qualified in the 100m and 300m hurdles, while Clara Adams qualified in the 200m dash.
With mileage already in their legs, the Bruins put on a one-of-a-kind show in the 4x400m from the start, with Blue getting them out to an early lead with an unofficial split of 54.8. Then, Fowler extended their lead with an unofficial 53.8-second leg, passing off to the CIF-SS Masters champion, Clara Adams. Adams ripped a 52.5 split to give Wilson a commanding lead entering the anchor leg. Varnado anchored the Bruins with 52.7 to break the California record.
As Varnado crossed the line, the stadium erupted, fully aware they had just witnessed history. This extraordinary quartet broke Long Beach Poly's 4x400m state record of 3:35.49, set in 2004, and then the national record as well. The only outdoor U.S. high school girls team faster than Long Beach Wilson are Montverde Academy (3:31.68) and Bullis (3:32.29) from the 2024 New Balance Outdoor Nationals.
U.S. High School Girls 4x400m All-Time List
