State Meet Preview: Division V

Division V Girls Preview

Runner to beat: Emily Perez, St. Joseph Notre Dame

Team to beat: St. Margaret's

Individual competition

St. Joseph Notre Dame's Emily Perez will be the slight favorite to win the individual title here. She won the North Coast Section individual title last year and finished in 2nd place at the state meet. She was unable to race to her section final this season. Her main competition should come from fellow Oregon State signee,  Healdsburg senior, Gabrielle Peterson. She finished in 25th place at last year's Division IV race but has improved dramatically since then. During the 2018 Track and Field season, Peterson recorded personal bests of 4:48.91 and 10:34.44. She has been equally as impressive this fall and will be chasing her first cross country state title. Southern Section champion Mia Barnett is also a strong contender and will not be afraid to run with the top two girls. Castilleja junior Tevah Gevelber easily won the Central Coast Section final and will be aiming at a top 10 finish. Sierra Canyon freshman Isis Diaz finished in second behind Barnett at the SS meet and will be a factor here as well. Along with Peterson and Perez, the North Coast Section should have a couple more runners in the mix including Mira Terdiman of Lick-Wilmerding and Callie Jones of Branson.

Team competition

The past few years, the Flintridge Prep girls dominated this division to the tune of four state team titles in a row. This year, the FP girls could win their fifth title in a row but this one will not be a runaway like previous seasons. At the just-completed SS finals, St. Margaret's eeked out a victory over Flintridge but they will need to prove themselves one more week in order to claim the team state title. San Francisco University and Lick-Wilmerding girls both made the podium last year with University in 2nd place ahead of their league rival. This year, L-W bested University at their league final and appear to have the slight edge. The Santa Fe Christian girls won the San Diego Section with an impressive score of 19. From the Central Coast Section, Castilleja bested Nueva and both teams will be vying for top 10 finishes at Saturday's final.
