CIF State Meet Preview: Field Events

Boys Shot Put

Favorite: Daniel Viveros (Liberty Bakersfield)

Leading Contenders: Carlos Aviles, Jeff Duensing

State Meet Record: Brent Noon (Fallbrook) 74' 4.75" 1990

Daniel Viveros comes into the state meet on a high note, having produced the #1 mark in the state in the Central Section Finals. He has thrown over 60 feet 8 times this season, including 4 in the 61-foot range, and that alone should keep him ahead of all but 5 or so of his competitors; however, he may need to duplicate or exceed his season best to take the crown. Carlos Aviles has two 63-foot marks this spring, although the last came in mid-April and he hasn't broken 60 feet in well over a month. Is that because he has simply been biding his time and advancing, or is it an indication of decline (perhaps due to increased focus on the discus)? We'll have the answer to this question on Friday. Jeff Duensing, the only other guy in the field to put the shot over 61 this spring, leads the sophomore contingent - he is joined by fellow Class of 2020 members Quinten Lyons and Tobin Phillips. Rounding out the 60-foot club is Silas Hurst, but keep an eye on Jaime Navarro, the candidate most likely to break through that barrier this weekend. Navarro has extra motivation, as he and teammate Harrison Gould can help propel Great Oak to the team championship with strong performances.

Girls Shot Put

Favorite: Jocelynn Budwig (Fowler)

Leading Contenders: Faimalie Sale, Natalie Ramirez, Hannah-Sophia Hall

State Meet Record: Anna Jelmini (Shafter) 53' 8" 2009

Jocelynn Budwig is the clear favorite here: she is the only girl in California to break 47 this season, and she has thrown farther than 46 in her last four meets (beyond 45 in 6 straight). That kind of consistent excellence will make her hard to beat this weekend. The only other athlete in the field that has broken 46 feet is Faimalie Sale, but she hasn't thrown farther than 44 feet since the end of March. Natalie Ramirez is a podium threat after winning the Southern Section, plus she has been over 44 in each of her last four competitions. Hannah-Sophia Hall is the fourth Golden State thrower with 45 on her resume, and she could be a sleeper candidate to take the title - she threw 46 last year, and finished 3rd in the 2017 state meet. Behind Hall is a large cluster of 44-footers who will either have to throw PR's or hope to pick off one of the top 4 having an off day. That group includes star freshman Faith Bender, as well as Shyann FranklinNu'u TuilefanoAna Tovi, and Maren Butler.
