A State Meet for the Ages

2 New State Meet Records! (Plus Two More, Sorta)

It's fitting that the biggest performances of the day, historically, were turned in by a pair of hurdlers. However, in the case of Tara Davis, it was her (finally!) wind-legal 22' 1" jump that earned her a spot in the meet's history books, moving Marion Jones down from the perch she occupied for 14 years. Interestingly, it wasn't even her best jump of the meet, as she went a whopping 0.25" farther on a wind-aided jump later in her series, and that will stand as the winning mark. The wind-legal jump, though, will live on in the record books until the next great California long jumper comes along!

The other hurdler to set a record, of course, was Joseph Anderson. He clocked 13.33 in the 110 Hurdles, eclipsing the former mark of 13.39 with a legal wind of +1.4. The time is also US #1 this season, which could set up some interesting races on the postseason circuit.

There were two other performances that are noteworthy here, even though neither was a legal record. Javelin Guidry ran 10.13 in the 100 with a big tailwind, which is the best mark ever for a California boy under any conditions. Davis herself had the other mark, arguably the biggest of a big weekend: her 12.83 with a +3.7 wind is the fastest time ever run by a high school girl under any conditions! There isn't really such a thing as an "all conditions national record" because, by definition, wind-aided performances are not considered legal for records. Nonetheless, the mark is singular and worthy of remembrance, and you can bet everyone who was in attendance will be talking about it for some time!
