Girls Preview & Virtual Meet
When the lowest team score in the virtual meet is 138 points, you know that there isn't a truly dominant team in the field. And that's often a good thing, because it means the team battle will be very competitive, and that adds excitement to the meet! Defending team champs Capistrano Valley lost a lot to graduation, but they are still very much in the hunt for a repeat win. The slight favorite, though, is Trabuco Hills, whose depth and pack-running ability make them difficult to beat. Neither team can focus solely on the other one, because Mission Viejo and Dana Hills are definitely in striking range and either of those squads could claim a spot in the top 3.
Ashley Licata (Capistrano Valley) is the top returner from last year's meet, but she isn't the favorite this time around. That's because Tesoro's Amanda Gehrich has continued this season where she left off at the end of her track season - absolutely on fire! Gehrich was the top California finisher at Woodbridge, then followed that with an equally strong performance in Portland. Nicole Zielinksi (Canyon) and teammate Sara Leonard have both started well this season, as has Cassi Durgy (Huntington Beach). Licata has competition as the top runner for Capistrano Valley so far this season - that comes from Haley Herberg, who could also be in the mix for the top 5. Stephanie Ortega (Segerstrom) finished 3rd here in 2014, and the database puts her just about in the same position for this weekend.
