One of the most competitive meets in the nation kicks off at 10:30 on Saturday morning, and the performances could leave the Cerritos College track scorched. Southern Section Division Finals brings together athletes from over 400 schools, competing in 4 divisions for the right to advance to the Masters meet next Friday. Last week's prelim meets produced nearly 800 MileSplit Elite Gold or Silver performances, and in many cases the athletes weren't even pushing their hardest yet.
That changes tomorrow. Only the top 9 in each event (regardless of division) can move on, and in many cases athletes that could easily make it to the state meet from other sections won't even get the chance to compete for one of those coveted 6 spots. The Southern Section postseason is a war of attrittion, with the stakes going up every round, and things start to get serious this weekend.
