Southern Section Division Finals Preview

Division 3 Girls Preview

Events to Watch
  • Trinity Ruelas (San Dimas) ran the fastest time in the prelims in what could be a tremendous 3200, as there are 4 girls that have run in the upper 10:40's. Jacquelyn Smith (Palos Verdes) has the top time on the season at 10:45, with Adilene Aldapa (San Marcos) and Ally Palomino (Bishop Amat) well within striking range.
  • In the 100 Dash, Jordyn Tucker (Monrovia) looks like a strong favorite until you throw out the wind-aided times. Then, Tucker's 12.15 puts her in a virtual dead heat with Shea Copeland (Harvard Westlake) and Sissy Farmer (Notre Dame), who have run 12.18 and 12.20. There is a second cluster of girls in the 12.30's, which should make for an interesting race (and maybe a little bit of a challenge for the FAT operators). The 200 could be even better, with the same three girls plus Tyler Duvernay (Notre Dame) and Chanel Rogers (Alemany) all having wind-aided sub-25's.
  • The triple jump is the most wide-open event in the division, with 3 girls that have jumped in the 37's this season duking it out for the win. Carolyn Weisman (San Marcos) is the slight favorite with her best of 37' 10" coming during last week's prelims, while freshman Micah Fulton (Monrovia) and Megan McFadden (St. Lucy's) were right behind her. There is also a group of mid-36 jumpers waiting to break through the 47-foot barrier, which would make things even more interesting.

Athletes to Watch
  • Santa Margarita is the only squad to have run under 48 for the 4x100, but they have to be on their game to say ahead of low-48's teams Monrovia and Notre Dame. Santa Margarita could get the sweep, as they are the only advancers from the prelims that have run under 4:00 - Brea Olinda did not advance despite having run 3:51 earlier this season.
  • Erica Schroeder (San Marcos) is gunning for the 1600-800 double, but she has at least one major opponent to overcome to get there. Brianna Bartello (Laguna Hills) joins Schroeder as the only other sub-5 1600 runner in the field, although Schroeder's best 800 time is 3 seconds better than the next-fastest competitor there.
  • Sidney Mosley (Monrovia) is set to dominate the 100 Hurdles, as she has been sub-14 in a division where there are only two other sub-15 girls. To get the double win, though, she will have to overcome the heavy favorite in the 300 hurdles, Courtney Corrin (Harvard Westlake).
  • Chanel Rogers (Alemany) should dominate the 400, as her 55.81 is well over a second ahead of the nearest challenger.
  • Alexandria Florent (Harvard Westlake) is the favorite in the high jump with a season best of 5' 9", although Hannah Nance (San Dimas) has cleared 5' 7", and that should keep Florent on her toes.
  • Unless something goes badly wrong, Kaitlin Merritt (Santa Margarita) should dominate the pole vault - she is the state leader this season with her 13' 7" mark.
  • Corrin has the potential to dominate the long jump as well as the 300 Hurdles, as her season best of 20' 8.5" is over 2 feet farther than anyone else in the division.
  • Nia Britt (Notre Dame) has a best of 47' 10.5" this spring (achieved in the prelims last week), enough to give her a pretty big cushion in the shot put. Chrisshnay Brown (Lompoc) is one of two other girls in the division to have thrown over 40 feet, and Brown is also the favorite in the discus with her season best of 139' 1".
