Southern Section Division Finals Preview

Division 4 Boys Preview

Events to Watch
  • There are no sub-15 guys in the 110 Hurdles - at least, not yet. Isaac Mowbray (Arrowhead Christian) has run 15.04, and Zinovian Cannady (Serra) is close behind at 15.18 this season. Chance Kuehnel (Sage Hill) and Jaiden Woobey (Serra) have also been under 15.40, which should make for a very close finish.
  • AV Bennett (Bishop Diego) and Taeon Mason (Muir) are the only guys that broke 11 in the 100 Dash prelims, although Malik Robertson (Serra) did it earlier in the season. Roberson and Bennett are also among the top 4 in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive 200, along with Nicholas Moore (Oaks Christian) and Branden Smith (Paraclete). All four are between 22.12 and 22.37 when you look at their season bests!
  • Nordhoff and Templeton could have quite a 4x400 battle, with the former having a season best of 3:23.78 and the latter clocking in at 3:24.22. Behind them are Oaks Christian, with a time of 3:26.78, and then three teams in the 3:28's.
  • The long jump lacks a dominant favorite, and that means there are several contenders for the win. Luke Nickelson (Nipomo) has a best of 21' 9", while Berlin Xie (Western Christian) and Roderick Atkinson (Serra) have both been beyond 21 feet.
  • Likewise for the discus throw, where Andrew Wilson (Twentynine Palms) enters the meet with a narrow edge; he has thrown 153' 3" this spring, but there are 4 guys in the upper 140's that will be gunning for him. Justin Coert (Fillmore) is the closest with his season best of 149' 9", and there are two more contenders in the 147's. Coert and Wilson find themselves looking up at Patrick Gonzalez (Sierra Canyon) in the shot put, as he has thrown over 55 feet - 4 feet better than his challengers.

Athletes to Watch
  • You've heard of the Oaks Christian girls, but their boys' 4x100 is also the top seed. If they can stay ahead of Serra, the only other sub-43 team in the division, then is could be a sweep of the sprint relays for the Lions.
  • Caleb Webb (Big Bear) is the dominant distance runner in the division, with season bests of 4:12 (5 seconds ahead of his nearest 1600 competitor) and 8:52 (giving him a whopping 16-second advantage in the 3200.
  • Varian Wilson (Nordhoff) is the only 400 runner in the division to have broken 50 so far this year, and that makes him a serious favorite. He also has a PR of 22.42 in the 200, which would put him right behind the leaders there.
  • Cameron Kunde (Nordhoff) is the top seed in the 800 with his season best of 1:54.07, leading teammate Landis Meyer by over 2 seconds.
  • Clayton Mackay (Templeton) can dominate the 300 Hurdles, as his 38.47 from earlier in the spring is fully 2 seconds faster than the closest challenger, making him the only sub-40 guy in the division.
  • Vince Porter (Polytech) has cleared 6' 9" this season, setting him apart from the rest of the high jump field, where the closes challenger is over 6' 6".
  • Barrett Weiss (Flintridge Prep) is the favorite in the pole vault with his season best of 15' 6", but Milo Browder (Oaks Christian) has cleared 14' 10".
  • Lorenzo Burns (Linfield Christian) was the only triple jumper to break 45 in the prelims last week, and he actually went 46' 4.25. Atkinson has also jumped over 46 feet this season, though, so the two should have an interesting duel.
