MileSplitCA visited with some of the returning CIF-State Track and Field champions for the purpose of filming a regular practice to produce a series of videos we are calling 'Workout of a State Champion'. This is boys 3200 champion Matt Strangio, a junior at Jesuit HS in Sacramento.Last June, as a sophomore, Strangio clinched the State 3200 title out-sprinting senior Justin Hazel over the final 150 meters. Strangio's winning time of 8:56.18 is the No. 2 returning time in California and the No. 1 returning time nationally among all boys in the Class of 2020. Strangio not only heads into his junior season as the defending State champion for 3200 meters on the track, but in the fall he won the CIF-State Division I cross country title and placed eighth at Nike Cross Nationals. MileSplitCA visited a Jesuit practice on Feb. 11, 2019 to film what was a Monday pre-season workout. In the video, we watch the Jesuit boys go through a 2x1K, 2x400 and 4x200 practice. The boys jog during a breaks between sets, and cool down with a casual three-mile run along a trail adjacent to the American River, which meanders not too far from campus. In the video, we hear from Strangio and legendary distance coach Walt Lange. We also get a brief look at the St. Francis girls team, which trains on the Jesuit track, aptly named after Coach Lange. Check out all the 'Workout of a State Champion' series features.
Defending CIF-State 1600m champion Liam Anderson, a senior from Redwood (NC) and defending CIF-State 3200m champion Matt Strangio, a junior from Jesuit (SJ), are scheduled to go head-to-head in the elite 3200m race Saturday night at the Dublin Distance Fiesta.A year ago at Dublin, Strangio placed second and Anderson was third. At the State Meet, Anderson placed fifth after winning the 1600 title earlier in the day. Saturday, Anderson is scheduled to run both the 800 and 3200. Both were interviewed about a month ago and asked about the challenge the other presents in the 3200-meter race. While this video serves to advance the 3200 race at Dublin, the references are toward the State Meet. These are two of the top distance runners in the country. Anderson, bound for Stanford, is a two-time State cross country divisional champion, 2018 Nike Cross National champion, and 2018 Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Strangio is also a State cross country divisional champion who was eighth at NXN, as CA boys took three of the top eight spots (Newbury Park junior Nico Young was fourth)!!RELATEDAnderson vs. Strangio comparisonDublin Distance Fiesta PreviewWorkout of a State Champion: Matt StrangioWATCH LIVE: Dublin Distance Fiesta Live Stream on MileSplit
