SENIOR STARS Can't Miss 2023 Athletes At CA Winter Champs

Janelle Avilez (Etiwanda/SS) - Janelle is the top qualifier in the 1500 meters having run the two fastest times among qualifiers, 4:40.56 and 4:44.29. She has an outdoor 1600m best of 5:10.07 from the CIF-SS D-1 prelims. 

Adonijah Currie (Golden Valley/SS) - Currie, headed next year to Arizona State, has the No. 4 qualifying time in the 150m dash (18.22) and is scheduled to compete in the 4x200m relay. She was third here last year in the 150m (18.39) and went on to place fifth at State in the 200m (24.05).  She is the state's top returner in both the 200m (23.45/2.2; 23.82/1.6 ranks No. 2) and 400m (53.69).

Y'Vette Harris (Lincoln/SJ) - Harris is one of the state's top hurdlers who is scheduled to compete here again this winter in the pentathlon. Last year she placed second in the five-event competition (60mH, HJ, SP, LJ, 800m) with 2903 points. Harris ran the third-fastest time at the meet in the 60mH last year (9.00) and went on to have a stellar outdoor season, placing second at the CIF-State Meet in the 100mH (14.12) and fifth in the 300mH (42.67). 

Alyssa Hope (ML King/SS) - Alyssa, a senior headed to USC in the fall, has the top qualifying marks in both the triple jump (39-00.50) and long jump (18-07.50). Last spring, she won the CIF-State title in the triple jump (40-02.75) and placed second in the long jump (20-04).

Samira Kennedy (Castilleja/CC) - Samira, headed next year to Harvard, has the state's fastest 600m clocking at 1:34.52. She also qualified in the 150m (42.11). Her 2:10.72 PR for 800m from the Arcadia Invitational last spring ranks No. 7 in CA among returners. She is the defending Central Coast Section champion for 800m and was the CCS 1600m runner-up last May.

Marjourie Lopez (Shadow Hills/SS) - Marjourie has CA's top overall time in the 3000 meters at 10:11.01. She was third here last winter at 10:29.56. She is coming off a cross country season where she placed third in CIF-SS Division 3 and ninth at the State Meet.

Allura Markow (Dana Hills/SS) - Allura, a University of Oregon-bound distance star, has the No. 2 qualifying time in the 600-meter run (1:35.34) and the No. 2 time in the 1500m (4:44.30). She was second in the 3K here last year (10:19.26). She is coming off a cross country season where she won the CIF-SS Division 3 title and also qualified to compete for the West Region team at the Champs XC Nationals. Last spring on the track she placed 10th at the State Meet in the 1600m (4:50.89 PR). 

Kailah McKenzie (Orange Vista/SS) - Kailah has the top qualifying time in the 60m hurdles at 8.93, run at last week's Vista Murrieta WCQ meet. Her previous entry time of 8.97 is the only other sub-9 of the winter. She is also scheduled to run in both the 4x200m relay and the sprint medley relay. McKenzie was second in the 60mH here last year (8.84) and went on to place sixth in the 100mH at the State Meet (14.54) after winning titles at both CIF-SS D-1 and CIF-Masters (14.03/2.2). 

Brazil Neal (Serra/SS) - Brazil, who recently signed with the University of Oregon, is the returning State champion for 200m (23.68/4.6) and runner-up for 100m (11.57/3.3). She is scheduled here in the 60m (7.80), 150 (18.49) and as part of the top-qualified 4x200m relay (1:40.98), where she is scheduled to join seniors Sadia Green and Jordan Washington, and junior Mia Flowers. 

Giovana Pelascini (Trinity Pacific Christian/SS) - Giovana is the returning Winter champion in the pentathlon, scoring 3007 points last January to beat Y'Vette Harris. These two will battle again here on Saturday over the five events: 60mH, HJ, SP, LJ, 800m.

Cate Peters (Monte Vista/NC) - Cate, headed to Stanford University in the fall, is scheduled to run the 150m here (40.09). She has CA's No. 2 returning outdoor time for 800m (2:06.89) and the No. 3 returning time for 400m (54.72). An injury early last May kept her from competing during the CIF post-season. 

Sinaiah Pointer (Etiwanda/SS) - Sinaiah is the top qualifier in the shot put (39-07.00). She placed third in the shot at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals (38-06.50) and her 40-02 PR ranks ninth among CA returners for the outdoor season.

Reign Redmond (Carson/LA) - Reign, the defending 100-meter dash champion from the CIF-State Meet, has the No. 2 qualifying time in the 60m dash at 7.60. She also ran the winter's fastest time in the 150m dash at 17.92 but was not listed among entries in that event. She won the State Meet title in 11.56 (3.3). Her 11.45 (1.7) from State Prelims is the top returning 100m time in CA. Her top returning 200m time of 23.86 (2.0), also from State Prelims, ranks No. 5 among returners for all conditions. 

Angela Schykerynec (Orland/NS) - Angela, headed to Cal in the fall, has the top qualifying entry in the weight throw (56-03). She is the defending Northern Section champion in the shot put and enters the outdoor season with a best in that event of 39-04.

Anastasia Snodgrass (JSerra/SS) - Anastasia, headed to Cal in the fall, is scheduled to compete in three events: the 600m, where she is the No. 5 qualifier (1:37.76), the 1500m, where she is the No. 7 qualifier (4:51.03), and on the top-qualified 4x800m relay team (9:33.00) along with juniors Georgia Jeanneret and Brooke O'Brien, and sophomore Brynn Garcia. That quartet will be after the meet record of 9:13.99 set last year by a lineup of Jeanneret, O'Brien, Snodgrass and then-senior Ashlee Gallegos. The JSerra girls are coming off a cross season where they won CIF-SS Division 4 and CIF-State titles and competed at Team Nationals.

Jordan Washington (Serra/SS) - Jordan, one of CA's elite returning sprinters, is scheduled in the 60m (7.89) and as part two relays. Serra has the top qualifying mark in the 4x200m (1:40.98) and Washington is scheduled to be joined by seniors Sadia Green and Brazil Neal and junior Mia Flowers. Serra's sprint medley relay (100m-100m-200m-400m) team that also includes junior Jaiya Fletcher, Green and senior Sienna Claiborne has the No. 4 qualifying time (1:54.28).
