VENTURA -- Two leading storylines among the girls heading into Saturday's D-2 Finals are how dominant can Golden Valley be in the sprints and jumps, and just how fast will Ventura freshman Sadie Engelhardt go in the 800m and 1600m?
Engelhardt has spent her first outdoor season of high school competition obliterating national class distance records while dropping national-ranked and all-time CA marks. Her 2:05.66 for 800m from the West Coast Relays ranks No. 3 nationally regardless of class, and her 4:33.29 for 1600m (fully automatic timing en route during the mile at Arcadia) is a state record that ranks U.S. No. 1.
While both the 800m and 1600m fields are loaded with stellar athletes, no one in these fields has come close to touching Engelhardt at her best.
Golden Valley has three of the top four qualifiers in the 100m, led by junior Ta'Ahjah Fann (12.22/1.9), three qualifiers in the 200m, led by junior Adonijah Currie (24.18), the top 4x100m relay team, two of the top qualifiers in the high jump and long jump in senior Kylee Davis and sophomore Meagan Humphries, and senior Olivia Dowd in the mix in the triple jump. Heavily favored to claim their first divisional team title, the Grizzlies have 13 scoring opportunities on tap this upcoming weekend.
Battling for team points and Masters Meet qualifying slots in the 800m is JW North junior Mackenzie Browne, Chino senior Mia Chavez, and Anaheim Canyon senior Emma Hadley. Same in the 1600m, with Hadley, Chavez, Dana Hills junior Allura Markow, and Hadley's classmate Isabella Frisone. Markow is the top qualifier in the 3200m with Frisone and Agoura senior Georgia McCorkle near the top.
Thousand Oaks senior Lauren Thai is the top qualifier in both hurdles and also advanced in the long jump.
West Torrance senior Amor Jones (100m), Glendora senior Maya Shinnick (400m), Mayfair senior Chelsea Aninyei (triple jump), West Covina junior Devin Jackson (shot put), and South Torrance sophomore Mackenzie Monson (discus throw) are among other top qualifiers.
Among the boys, Long Beach Jordan sophomore Jordan Washington is the top qualifier in both short sprints after running 10.40 (2.7) and 21.20 (1.7) respectively.
Other top qualifiers are Dana Hills senior Jai Dawson in the 800m (1:52.2) and 1600m (4:19.44). Hart senior Jaden Wiley in the 3200m (9:10.73). Mater Dei junior Logan Lyght in the 110m hurdles (14.71) and is the No. 2 qualifier in the 300m hurdles (39.51) behind Jordan junior Darryll Stevens (38.53). Golden Valley senior Elijha Ellis in both horizontal jumps after going 23-1.50 (0.2) and 45-3.75 (2.0) in the long and triple, respectively. West Ranch senior Chris Goode in the 400m (47.68).
Top qualifiers in the throws are Westlake junior Adam Laycock (discus, 179-00) and Golden Valley senior Terraine Wiggins (shot put, 52-0.50).
