State Meet Preview: Sprints, Hurdles, Relays

GIRLS HURDLES

Despite being new to competing in the hurdles this season, Long Beach Wilson junior Rachel Glenn won the Southern Section Division and Masters titles in the 300s and qualified for State in both. (Josh Barber photo)

100 Meter Hurdles

  • 2018 Champion: Jada Hicks | Upland (SS) Sr. | 13.35 (1.3)
  • Meet Record: 13.03 | Vashti Thomas | San Jose Mt. Pleasant (CC) | 2007

While seven of the top 10 qualifiers here will not be walking at graduation this spring, it is a senior who looms as the 100-meter hurdler to beat if healthy. Silver Creek senior Jazlynn Shearer is the top returner in this event, having placed fourth last year in 13.76 behind three standout seniors. Shearer has the No. 1 time in the state (13.36, U.S. No. 2 tie) and the No. 1 time among qualifiers (13.86). This is her fourth consecutive year qualifying for the State Meet in the 100 hurdles and she's looking for her third trip to the finals. When she gets there, she's likely to find Long Beach St. Anthony sophomore Asjah Atkinson standing next to her. Atkinson, seventh here as a freshman (14.26), has the No. 2 qualifying time (14.08/CA No. 5). She comes in after having won a CIF-SS Division title for the second year in a row and CIF-SS Masters for the first time. Edison (SJ) senior Cyvanna Bowen, a finalist last year (14.43), has the No. 8 qualifying time (14.34) and a season PR of 13.77 (CA No. 3). Those expected in the mix for medals include San Diego HS senior Sonia Redon (14.17/CA No. 6), Norco junior Taylor Shorter (13.92/CA No. 4), St. Francis (SJ) sophomore Reyna Johnson (14.26/CA No. 7), Long Beach Wilson junior Rachel Glenn (14.32/CA No. 10t), Calabasas sophomore Jade McDonald (14.29/CA No. 9) and Bakersfield Liberty sophomore Reese Renz (14.32/CA No. 10t).

300 Meter Hurdles

  • Meet Record: 40.10 | Ebony Collins | Long Beach Wilson (SS) | 2005

Neither of the two returning athletes from the 2018 finals made it back to Buchanan. Calabasas senior Kyla Robinson-Hubbard, who was second to Bernard-Joseph last year, was disqualified at the league finals, and Long Beach Poly senior Kenya Payne, who was fourth in 2018, was DQed at the Section Final. So that leaves it wide open for the likes of top qualifier and state leader Rachel Glenn of Long Beach Wilson (41.01), Riverside North junior Amari Jenkins (42.82), Dana Hills senior Hailey Ray (43.33) and a pair of sophomores who round out the qualifying top five: Reese Renz of Bakersfield Liberty (43.47) and Jordyn Grady of Upland (43.90). Glenn's qualifying mark is her PR. Renz won the seeded heat at Arcadia in 42.40, which is No. 3 in CA. Stockton Edison (SJ) senior Deja Hudson has a best of 43.11 (CA No. 5) and Norco's Taylor Shorter has gone 43.55 (CA No. 8). Las Lomas senior Taylor Weidinger went 43.67 (CA No. 10).
