How good is the MileSplit database at ranking cross country teams? Well, it depends on how you use it. If you just look at straight rankings for a single distance, it can be very inaccurate due to variations in courses. However, if you look at more than one distance, and drill down to take into account the courses run, then the database can be very good. Nothing can predict the vagaries of a state meet, of course - who knows which teams will elevate or crumble under pressure? Our rankings are good enough to identify the true contenders, though, and that's all we really need going into Saturday's meet. Also, it's interesting to note how many teams from our preseason Countdown to XC made it to Clovis - and those teams were selected entirely based on a combination of database stats!
