BOYS FIELD EVENTS

HJ Defending champion Sean Lee (Trabuco Hills) and Daylon Hicks (Clayton Valley), who was 5th at last year's final, were two of six boys clearing 6-5 to advance to Saturday's final. Four others advanced at 6-3. Three others had a jump off for the final two spots in the finals, won by Joseph Ruddell (Morro Bay) at 6-4 and Reece Stratford (Scotts Valley) at 6-1. Five of the final seven spots went to jumpers who were all tied for 15th in the season rankings with a best of 6-6. The biggest outlier in this field and maybe in all of the field events is the State Meet finals qualification of senior Chris Toler (Vacaville). Toler came into the competition with a best of 6-2 and ranked tied for 80th. Toler got a 1-inch PR on his first attempt and will now jump on Saturday night at State. Wow!

LJ Sophomore Malcolm Clemons (St. Mary's) had the top qualifying mark (24-03.25) and another 2020, Caleb Foster (Clovis North) had the No. 3 mark (23-06.25). Also moving on included Talin Lewis (Oaks Christian) CJ Stevenson (Great Oak), Alex Enos (St. Ignatius) and Jalyn Jackson (Eastlake). Nobody hit a PR jumping into an extremely full sandbox, which included Malcolm Wesley (Santa Ana Valley) who came into the competition ranked CA #36 but qualified 9th 22-7.25, 2.75-inches under his PR. The 12th qualifying spot taken by Jones Jermel (Grace Bretheren) was at 22-5.50. Based on rankings at ca.milesplit.com, 22-05.50 ranked as the 65th best jump this season.

TJ Defending State champion CJ Stevenson had the top qulifying mark (49-11.75) despite taking only one jump.  Jalyn Jackson (Eastlake), runner-up to Stevenson last year, qualified fourth (47-10.00). Sophomore Malcolm Clemons (Berkeley St. Mary's), 5th at last year's final, qualified 5th (47-7.50 PR). Also hitting season bests were junior DeAndra McDaniel (Natomas), 48-10 for 2nd, sophomore Kosi Agina (Sanger) 47-10.75 for 3rd and junior Deondre Ruth (Oceanside) 46-7.75 for 9th.

PV Sondre Guttormsen (Davis) was one of eight to clear 15-3 with the other four qualifiers clearing 14-9. Those missing out despite clearing 14-9 was Ernesto Collazo, who is among the deep field event qualifiers for Great Oak. Guttormsen, the CA record holder at 18-02.50, passed at the two opening heights, 14-3 and 14-9 and then took one attempt to clear 15-3. In the interim, he qualified for the final in the 110 hurdles and helped him brother Simen Guttormsen move on with a best of 14-9. Simen cleared both opening heights in one jump and missed his only attempt at 15-3 before shutting it down. William O'Brien (Loyola) was clean through the first three heights and Christian Valles (Canyon Country Canyon) was clean through the first two heights and then passed at 15-3.

SP Junior Daniel Viveros (Liberty) and senior Harrison Gould (Great Oak) both threw 61-plus as the top two qualifiers. Viveros, 3rd at last year's finals as a sophomore, went 61-2.25. Gould hit a PR of 61-01 with sophomore Jeff Duensing (Esperanza) third at 60-03.75. Former state leader Carlos Aviles (Ventura) was the 12th and final qualifier at 54-11.25. It's the second-lowest throw of the season for him and his second 54-footer in the last four meets. Missing the cut was senior Jaime Navarro (54-00.25), the second of the seven field event slots Great Oak brought to Clovis in hopes of riding that and a strong 4x100 relay team to an overall team title.

DT Gavin Fua (Valley Christian) had the top throw in the prelims with his first throw of the competition, a 188-00 PR to out-distance runner-up Carlos Aviles (Ventura) 185-06. Great Oak's duo of Harrison Gould (184-09 PR) and Jaime Navarro (170-03) moved on. Navarro hit his qualifying mark on the final of his three attempts to slip into the 12th and final qualifying spot. Christian Johnson (Buchanan), who has a CA #2 best of 191-9, qualified 11th at 170-10, which he hit on his first attempt and then fouled the other two. Daniel Viveros (Liberty) threw 176-7 on his first attempt and then passed the other two.
