CIF-Southern Section League Finals Recaps (updated)

South Coast League

Trabuco Hills junior Jake Burns, senior Collin Hurd and Mission Viejo sophomore Ashley Johnson were among the standouts at Friday's meet at Trabuco Hills HS.

Burns won the 100 meters, lowering his CA #3-ranked time to 10.56 (1.6). He came back to win the 200 in 21.40 (CA #4) and also won the long jump (22-00.50).

Hurd won both hurdles, including a .64 drop under 38 seconds for the first time in the 300 hurdles to 37.70, which places him #4 in California. Hurd was given the nod over Robbins Michael (Tesoro; senior) in the 110 hurdles. Both were clocked in 14.63 (2.6).

Johnson continues to look like a CIF favorite in the 800 in both the Southern Section (Mission Viejo is the only team in the league allocated to Division 2) but also at the State level. Johnson, who went 2:12.95 at the Mt. SAC Relays, won in 2:13.04, with teammate Morgan Calcagnie second in a 2:14.85 PR. Johnson ranks No. 2 in the CIF-SS Division 2 in the 800 behind Saugus senior Mariah Castillo, who has dropped the event to concentrate on the longer distances. Calcagnie ranks 4th. Discounting Castillo, Johnson ranks fifth in the Southern Section and ninth in the State.

In the boys distances, Ryan Bush (Tesoro; senior) won a very competitive 800 in 1:53.85 (has gone 153.55, CA #10), holding off Mission Viejo senior Brett Hickman (1:55.13; he has gone 1:53.40), and Dana Hills senior Josh Dowdy (1:55.45 PR).

Hickman earlier won the 1600 (4:17.67; he has a best of 4:15.95 for CA #17), holding off Tesoro junior Bryson Crites (4:19.22).

The Dana Hills distance team dominated the 3200 in hierarchical order: senior Jack Landgraf (9:13.31), junior Simon Fuller (9:18.17) and sophomore Caleb Niednagel (9:18.70) going 1-2-3. It was a 3-plus-second drop for Landgraf, whose previous best of 9:16.40 was good for CA #36. That 9:13.31 puts him No. 9 in D1. Fuller had an eight-second drop from his Arcadia PR of 9:26.26. Niednagel has a best of 9:14.10.
