Central Section Masters Recap

Boys Highlights

The distance races stole the spotlight Saturday at Memorial Stadium, and you can already see the state meet strategies unfolding. Evert Silva (Fresno) cruised to a 7th-place finish in the 1600, choosing to focus on the 3200. In that race, he battled with Miguel Villar (Madera South) and Marcus Mota (Stockdale) for all 8 laps before coming out victorious, his time of 9:11.36 beating Villar by just under a second. All three advance, and all three should be competitive at the state meet. Moises Medrano (Highland Bakersfield) posted a season-best and CA #2 time of 1:51.47 in the 800, fending off a strong challenge from Andrew Scherf (Clovis), now CA #4. In fact, it looks like the Central Section has a solid chance to put three 800 runners in points at the state meet, with Peter Handy (Bakersfield) sitting at CA #7 right now.

Can somebody tell me where Kazmier Allen (Tulare Union) came from? He's run 4 races this season, starting with a 10.88 and improving to a CA #6 10.56 this past weekend! Dude also jumps over 22 feet in the long jump, although he did not advance in that event. Kazmier is a junior, so we really hope to see more than 4 races from him next year!  We predicted the "Battle of the Wilsons" would have a mixed outcome, and we were right: Jacob Wilson (Buchanan) won the shot put with a mark of 64' 6.5, while Jonah Wilson (Clovis) threw 199' 11" to win the discus.
