Tyler Stutzman just concluded his final season of high school track at Western Albemarle, which included helping his team to a state track team title with 3200 and 800 state crowns and a third place finish in the 1600 in a grueling triple at the AA State Outdoor Championships. Stutzman was the only runner under 4:10 for 1600 meters this spring from Virginia and was a Nike All-American indoors in the mile for a second year in a row. Stutzman finished with personal bests of 9:03 for 3200 meters and 1:53 for 800 meters. Stutzman ran some great anchor legs for Western Albemarle's DMR including a national indoor title in the DMR in 2008 and a 10:01 relay performance in 2009.   In the fall, Stutzman will join another great from Virginia's deep class of 2009 male distance runners in Foot Locker Nationals 3rd place finisher Thomas Porter at Stanford University as they were recruited out Palo Alto by former UVA coach Jason Dunn. One cannot fault Tyler Stutzman (pictured left by Tim Fulton) for Western Albemarle coming up short in defending their title in the distance medley relay at the Loucks Games held in New York. Stutzman was given the baton as the 1600 meter anchor leg for the Warriors with a 25 yard lead on the second place squad from Westerly High School in Rhode Island. The Group AA indoor state 1600 meter indoor champion proceeded to run the next four laps in a split of 4 minutes and seven seconds, but it was not enough to hold off the Nike Indoor Nationals mile champion Andrew Springer, who posted an incredible split of 4:03.6 to catch Stutzman at the very end. Westerly and Springer claimed the win and US #1 time at 10:01.13, while Western Albemarle and Stutzman were second in a US #2 time of 10:01.87. The performance also ranks the Western Albemarle squad as the 12th fastest all-time in US history. It is amazing to think that the Charlottesville area has two of the best DMR's all-time in Virginia high school state history at the same time (with the except of Alan Webb and the South Lakes 9:49.78 national record DMR in 2001) as the Albemarle boys ran a state indoor record and just missed a national record in the DMR with their 10:02.13 victory at Nike Indoor Nationals. Photo by Tim Fulton A thrilling DMR on Thursday at the Loucks Games as Andrew Springer of Westerly (RI) anchored his relay with a 4:03.6 1600 meter split to overtake Western Albemarle (VA) and Tyler Stutzman at the very end for a US #1 10:01.13 win. Western Albemarle and Stutzman, who ran a solid 4:07 anchor leg, were a close runner-up at 10:01.87. Shelby Greany, fresh off her high school national record performance in the 2K steeplechase this past week, brought her team from behind with a 4:47.6 anchor split to give the Suffern (NY) girls the victory in US #1 11:49.46. It is regional week in Virginia with 8 indoor regional championships being contested for the Group AAA and Group AA classifications. All of the regionas from the largest classificiation (Group AAA) are being held this weekend on Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday evening at the Region II Championships, Western Albemarle senior Tyler Stutzman (pictured left by David Fleenor) posted an impressive performance on a short 10 laps to a mile indoor track at Fork Union Military Academy's Estes Center. Stutzman won the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:14.33, which easily breaks the facility record of 4:17 held by 2007 Nike Indoor Nationals 800 meter champion Axel Mostrag. Mostrag had broken a record previous held by former prep great Seneca Lassiter at 4:19 to put Stutzman's performance further in a historical perspective. Stutzman is currently the national leader at 3200 meters in 9:05.58. VA 2A Region II Championship Results The Region IV Championships were the earliest held regional meet in Virginia this past Saturday at Virginia Tech and the top performances came from the Blacksburg High School distance runners with their boys 4x800 meter relay team breaking 8 minutes to join roughly a dozen other squads in the country to have dipped under the barrier in 7:58.98. Meanwhile, Blacksburg junior Joanna Stevens broke 5 minutes in the 1600 meter run in 4:58.94 with twin sister Kathleen trailing close behind at 5 flat. VA 2A Region IV Championship Results

It was not the best of times for Western Albemarle senior Tyler Stutzman in late November for the Foot Locker South in Charlotte, North Carolina. He had given his all in a quest to make it to the Foot Locker Nationals, but his body shut down on him. In top 10 position with less than 400 meters to go, a dehydrated and energy depleted Stutzman bonked and was unable to finish the race. Meanwhile, his teammate Kyle Satterwhite and familar rival Alex Ott went by him at that time to move onto the Foot Locker Finals in San Diego. It was not Stutzman's day, but this indoor season has proven to be very fruitful for him and he has rarely come up empty handed. Between punching his ticket to Millrose with an incredible negative split and 2:02 last half mile in a victory at the Montgomery Invitational mile earlier this month as well as most recently running the nation's fastest 3200 meter time at 9:05 in a great duel against Bobby Peavey at Virginia Tech, Stutzman has made up for that missed opportunity in November. His redemption from not making it to San Diego may come this weekend on the big stage in the high school mile at the Millrose Games, which will be televised to a national audience on ESPN. With one of the fastest mile times currently in the nation and fresh off his big PR 3200 performance at Tech, the senior from Crozet, VA has an excellent chance to make history in becoming only the third Millrose Games high school mile champion from Virginia. Due to a decline by one of the nine original selections for the high school boys' mile at the Millrose Games, Thomas Edison senior and Foot Locker All-American Leoule Degfae will now be joining original selections and fellow Virginians Tyler Stutzman of Western Albemarle and Bobby Peavey of Kellam in the prestigous race. The state of Virginia will represent a third of the total field with the top three finishers from the Montgomery Invitational mile race two weeks ago. Stutzman won the race in Landover, Maryland to virtually cement his spot in the Millrose field in a US #4 time of 4:14.91, while Peavey and Degfae had to sweat out their selections as they had to wait to see how others on the East Coast ran on faster banked tracks up north.  Peavey followed up his runner-up finish to Stutzman by posting another swift time this past weekend in the 1600 meter run at the Eastern Challenge with a 4:14.84 win. Peavey and Degfae also have the nation's #1 and #2 fastest times for 3200 meters at 9:08 and 9:13 respectively this season. The mile at Montgomery was Stutzman's only race thus far this season compared to Peavey and Degfae who have already competed in several invitationals, but he will competing at Virginia Tech this weekend as he tunes up for the big race in the Big Apple. He'll be running the 3200 in Blacksburg to see if he can post similar season best times to Peavey and Degfae. The Millrose Games high school boys' mile race will be held Friday, January 30th on the 11 laps to a mile banked track at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Marsico & Wilson willing to accept first defeats of season for tickets to San Diego & Foot Locker Nationals Virginia runners will be racing for the opportunity to compete in the 30th anniversary of the Foot Locker National cross country championships on Saturday at the South regional in Charlotte, North Carolina. The state of Virginia was well represented last fall in San Diego for the national race with a total of six finalists (four boys, two girls). Can 2009 Foot Locker South turn out to be just as successful for the state which draws the largest participants outside of the homestate North Carolina? With four boys entrants having run faster state meet times than 2007 finalists Thomas Porter and Michael Hammond as well as two girls having went the entire season undefeated so far, the chances of a repeat performance are strong. We shall see though as the South Region expects to have two competitive seeded races. More... The 2008 McDonald's X-Country Festival at Maymont will not only help sort out who will be the favorites for state cross country titles this fall, but also who will be the runners and team seeing themselves racing into December in either Portland or San Diego this season. The Jamestown boys (Williamsburg, VA) have been racing at the Maymont Festival for years and this year's meet could be the most important as the top ranked team in Virginia and #2 ranked team in the Southeast region will be the squad which everyone else in the invitational division will be attempting to measure themselves up against and try to knock off the top ranked school from Williamsburg. The race for first among the top individuals should be even more exciting and wide open with five of the top six ranked runners in Virginia in the field as well as 12 of the top 15. Read more... The Lautzenheiser twins of Midlothian have been ranked among the top 15 runners in the state of Virginia throughout the fall and now another pair of sisters finds itself ranked among the 15 runners featured in MileStat.com's Cream of the Crop rankings. Cosby senior Jenna Moye, a returning Group AAA All-State cross country runner and her kid sister in freshmen Megan Moye, move into this week's rankings after impressive finishes in a loaded varsity A division last weekend at the Oatlands Invite. The Moye sisters were the second and fourth fastest Virginians on the day with their 8th (Jenna Moye - 19:15) and 12th (Megan Moye - 19:22) place finishes. Tyler Stutzman's second place finish (15:44) to one of the nation's best distance runners Solomon Haile was a great run including defeating the likes of top ranked runners Thomas Porter and Alex Ott, but Jamestown's Andrew Colley gets his shot with the #1 ranking after running the third fastest time ever at the historic Eastern State Hospital course in his 14:47 victory at the William & Mary Invite. Colley and Stutzman will not have to wait long to decide who the real #1 ranked runner is as the two will face off in another loaded field of stars at this weekend's Maymont Festival. Can any Virginian stop Solomon Haile at Saturday's Oatlands Invitational? The Ethiopian native competes at Sherwood High School in Maryland and is one of the nation's top returning distance runners after winning national titles in the 5K last year at Nike Indoor and Nike Outdoor Nationals. He will be given his toughest test likely until Foot Locker regionals as five of the top six runners in Virginia will be racing at Oatlands with #1 Tyler Stutzman, #2 Thomas Porter, #3 Ben Dejarnette, #5 Alex Ott, and #6 Kyle Satterwhite. (Photo from mocorunning.com) This Saturday should push the Oatlands Invitational over the top into becoming a nationally recognized event with a huge field of 101 schools featuring some national caliber teams and athletes including the Saratoga Springs girls of New York and Solomon Haile of Sherwood (MD). Both will be heavy favorites in Leesburg despite the fact that most of Virginia's best will be present to give their best against the national powerhouse squad and emerging individual national star.

There is a pretty solid group of 8 runners who are forming as the state's top tier of boys cross country runners this fall in Tyler Stutzman, Thomas Porter, Ben Dejarnette, Andrew Colley, Alex Ott, Kyle Satterwhite, Josh Morris, and Bobby Peavey. Who is this week's #1? It is tough to call with none of the mentioned runners having raced head to head yet. The Oatlands Invitational this weekend will change that with Stutzman, Porter, Dejarnette, Ott, and Satterwhite racing in a field which will also include of the nation's top returning runners in Solomon Haile (Sherwood HS of MD), the Nike Indoor and Outdoor Nationals 5K champ last year. Megan Marsico's recent string of jaw dropping performances could not be overlooked and helped move her up to the #2 spot in Virginia and knocking on the door of defending Group AA state champ Kathleen Lautzenheiser (pictured left by Ted Plunkett), who rolled on her anchor leg at Brentsville to lead Midlothian to victory. Marsico destroyed the field at Knights Crossing in a meet record time of 18:01 as she bested the old record held by three-time AAA state champ and Foot Locker finalist Catherine White. Updated individual rankings for Virginia high school cross country as of September 11th. Western Albemarle's Tyler Stutzman impressed enough in his 9:42 split at the Ragged Mountain Cup to usurp pre-season #1 Thomas Porter, despite Porter winning the Chancellor Invite quite easily to start his season. Group AA boys are also well represented in the Cream of the Crop rankings with five of the top seven rankings in Tyler Stutzman, Andrew Colley, Alex Ott, Kyle Satterwhite, and Josh Morris. Newcomers to the Cream of the Crop (top 15 best individual runners in VA) include James Robinson's Jared Berman, Blacksburg's Allison Homer, Mountain View's Kaitlyn Davis, Midlothian's Leia Lautzenheiser, and Millbrook's Sullivan Parkes. So 9:42 might not sound fast for two miles for a runner of the caliber of Tyler Stutzman with track bests of 9:15 for 3200 meters and 4:14 for 1600 meters, but the Western Albemarle senior broke well under 10 minutes on a hilly and challenging two mile layout at Panorama Farms on a hot and humid afternoon for the 2008 Ragged Mountain Cup. It was an amazing feat, which should be taken seriously by all other top runners in the state of potential great things to come from Stutzman. He broke his own course record by 20 seconds from a year ago and also bested the previous best times on the older version of the two mile course for the Cup by a dozen seconds with his sensational anchor leg for the Western Albemarle Warriors. Many outstanding cross country runners have failed to come close to breaking 10 minutes at the Cup and Stutzman today simply shattered the barrier. More.. Luke Noble and the Albemarle boys expect to be a tougher challenger for Western Albemarle at tomorrow's Ragged Mountain Cup. Western Albemarle will still be the favorites with three sub 16 minute 5K runners in Tyler Stutzman, Kyle Satterwhite, and James Howard-Smith and finished nearly 2 minutes ahead of a fourth place Albemarle squad at the 2007 Cup. However, Albemarle's confidence is much higher from a year ago with three of their cross country team members running on a 7:42 4x800 meter relay this past June.
