Milesplit XC Journal - Cami Chapus Journal #3

Cami returns this season as one of the top distance runners in California.  In 2010 Cami finished the Cross Country season with a Division 4 State Title and a PR of 17:45 over the difficult 5k course.  Her success didn't end there as she made her mark in the mile during the 2011 outdoor season.  With another state title in the 1600 and a PR of 4:40.88 Cami moved into the US#1 spot.  One week later she hit the oval again against the countries best milers -  taking home the gold in the dream mile and cementing her US#1 spot.

Keep checking back as we follow Cami during her final high school cross country season.

Journal Entry #3  (November 16, 2011)

Hey! It’s been a few weeks since I last wrote a journal article and it seems like so much has happened. Before I know it, Thanksgiving holiday will be here and two days later… the CIF State Championship meet!

So, here is what I have been doing since writing my last journal. I took my first official college visit to Georgetown. It was amazing! Washington DC is very happening and the school is fantastic. One of the highlights of my trip was celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving with the team. It was very special. I also think I pr’d in my distance run with some of the girls while they were only just working out! (11 miles in 75min) I had a great time and Coach Milt is going to coach his team to a fantastic season.

Then I took the train over to Princeton for my second official visit. I thought it best to combine the two because traveling from California back and forth would take longer and I’d have to miss too much school.  It was great weather for both visits, the Fall colors were beautiful. My teammate, Amy Weissenbach, met me at Princeton and we had SO much fun walking around the beautiful campus, hanging with the team, and running the trails on campus. Princeton is also an amazing school!

Amy and I flew home excited about our college visits and promptly got sick. This seems to be the protocol this time of year. Trying to work hard through the week, our team prepared for the Mt. Sac Invite where we would be running in the D1 and D2 Sweepstakes. All I want to say about that race, is….I wish the finish line was two miles earlier. I was a little disappointed in my race.  After not having a bad race in a while, it was inevitable. In fact, my whole team was not too happy about our performance. We definitely learned from the experience and are keeping a positive mindset. I want to congratulate my friend, Sarah Baxter (sweetest girl ever! Sorry I couldn’t give you a race that particular day). Sarah is like the little Energizer Bunny that just keeps on going the same pace whether there is a huge hill in front of her or not.  Although I felt disappointed about the race, a couple hours later I re-grouped and learned from the experience.

A couple of runners on our team participated in the first annual  “In Honor of Conor” 5k walk/run. It was really nice and very well put together by Notre Dame HS. Conor is dearly missed at our Mission League meets this year.

(Editor's Note:  Conor Lynch was a student at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks and was hit by a car last year while running across the street during practice).

This past Wednesday was our Mission League finals at Crescenta Valley Park. THANK GOD it was not as hot as last year (over 100 degrees). It was still about 85 degrees, dry, and windy…but definitely better than last year. It was also our Senior Day! We had a few fans who came from school to watch our race and take photos. The underclassmen threw a great Senior Day for us with treats, special t-shirts, and laurel crowns. Caitlin Yee (on our girls varsity team) even drew a picture of me running as a gift. She is an amazing artist! I was happy with my race and happier to finish the league season with a pr for the course (18:02). Not only did we win the girls’ varsity race, but my teammate Aaron de Toledo (senior) had an AMAZING race and won the boys’ varsity league title. I train with Aaron a lot and he really helps push me to my limits in distance workouts; plus he keeps track of the mileage so I don’t need to.

My teammates and I are getting ready for the last month of racing. I am looking forward to shorter intervals and a reduction in mileage. This always brings out the best results. We are very excited for CIF and I know that my team is prepared.
