With the 2025-26 school year officially complete, it's time to turn the page toward cross country. Before the first races of the 2026-27 season begin, we looked back at the previous school year to identify California's top returning distance runners based on their performances across both XC and track.
The rankings below combine each athlete's fastest 5K XC performance, 3200m, 1600m, and 800m from the 2025-26 school year to determine the state's top returning all-around distance runners. While the four events measure different strengths, combining them provides a snapshot of each athlete's versatility and overall body of work throughout the school year.

1. Cooper Stream
The 2025 XC season marked a breakout season for Cooper Stream, in which he won the D2 CIF State XC Championship and qualified for the Nike Cross Nationals as an individual. He carried this momentum into an outstanding track season, posting the second-fastest 3200m time for a Californian this season. Stream will have the biggest target on his back this cross country season as the only returning CIF State XC Champion; however, his track season proves he looks more than ready for the challenge

3. Jaxon Northcutt
Last school year, Jaxon Northcutt established himself as the king of San Diego after winning the CIF San Diego Section XC and Track Championships. These section victories turned him into a state championship favorite, which translated to a 10th-place finish in XC and a 5th-place finish in the CIF 3200m final. After being battle-tested during Northcutt's junior year, expect him to be an even bigger factor at State Championships this coming school year.

8. Sterling White
Sterling White made history last season by breaking the freshman CIF State XC Championships course record and becoming the first California freshman to run under 9 minutes in the 3200m. Those milestones immediately placed him among the state's elite distance runners, and they could be just the beginning. If his freshman campaign is any indication, White appears poised for a remarkable sophomore season.

12. Djali de Chalus
The 2025-2026 school year launched Djali de Chalus into a top contender in California due to his massive improvements across the board. After finishing 114th at the CIF State XC Championships in 2024, he surged to eighth place the following year while also lowering his 3200m personal best to 9:02.44. With that kind of year-over-year progression, de Chalus looks primed to keep climbing the state's distance rankings this season.
