Standout Underclassmen at the CA Winter Championships

For underclassmen, the start of each season can be slow as they ease into competing against older athletes, but a few find a way to stand out regardless.

At this year's California Winter Track & Field Championships, multiple 9th- and 10th-grade students showcased their ability to hold their own against the very best in the state. Some of these standout performers even won championships and set meet records.

Maliyah Collins (Rosary Academy 10th grader) - 60m Dash (7.38) and 150m Dash (17.59) Winner. Her 60m Dash is tied for U.S. No.7 in all-conditions.

Laila Kirk (LB Poly 9th grader) - Ran 1:30.61 to win the 600m Dash and break the meet record. U.S. No.1 Freshman and U.S. No. 7 in all-conditions.

Jaelen Hunter (Servite 9th Grader) - 300m Dash (33.02) Winner. U.S. No.5 in all-conditions.

These championship-winning performances shouldn't be taken with a grain of salt. Look no further than Jalen Hunter's dominant 300m win. Last year, he finished third in 33.06, and he used that momentum to finish second at the CIF State Meet and secure the Brooks PR 400m title.

There's no question he will be in contention to follow up his fantastic freshman season, and you'd be remiss not to have the same expectations for Maliyah Collins and Laila Kirk. Both of these ladies captured significant victories over CIF State qualifiers, which has given them confidence for the 2026 season.

Ultimately, these aren't the only underclassmen to keep an eye on, as many will be looking to deliver even bigger performances later in the season. Check out the next two pages to see the standout underclassmen in each event at the California Winter Championships.
