It was only two years ago that a freshman took center stage at the CIF State Outdoor Championships.
No, not that freshman.
We're talking about Hanne Thomsen.
While Sadie Engelhardt has fast developed into a superstar in track and field in California and nationally, there's been another peer in her class performing at a similar level.
It's been the Montgomery High School junior.
Thomsen opened her career with a California state title in 2022, managing a brilliant race -- including a last lap kick to overtake the race's leader -- to take the tape in 10:06.89. Her career has since flourished, with three straight cross country titles to her name.
Thomsen went on to clock 9:55.31 for the 3,200m distance in 2023 and now in 2024, she's back in the state 3,200m final.
