The tight finish to the State 1600-meter final saw Andreas Dybdahl (right), edge Ryan Thomas (left), and Anthony Fast Horse (center), three of the top seven on the list of top combo 800-1600 distance runners during the 2023 outdoor season. Newbury Park's Aaron Sahlman, the overall combo leader, opted out in April of competing strictly in high school meets.

These combined rankings leaders are produced by pulling the top 100 performances in the 800-meter run, then adding the top 100 marks in the 1600-meter run. Athletes without times in both events were eliminated and the top marks for the remaining athletes were added together to get this rankings list.

Because the 800m is the foundation for this data article, athletes must have had a top-100 mark in that event to be included. Athletes with a high ranking in the 1600m without a top-100 mark in the 800m are not included.
