Sadie Engelhardt, who ran the 10th fastest 800m in CA history at the West Coast Relays last April, is back to headline a stacked meet at Buchanan High School.
CLOVIS -- A year ago at the West Coast Relays, Ventura's incomparable Sadie Engelhardt ran two laps around the track faster than only nine other girls in the history of California high school track and field.
That 800-meter tour last April of 2 minutes, 5.66 seconds ranks 10th in state history as part of a jaw-dropping resume for the now-sophomore that includes a CIF-State title for 1600m, runner-up medal for 800m, and CA records for both 1500m (4:11.79) and 1600m (4:33.29).
Engelhardt's outdoor season is scheduled to resume at Saturday's West Coast Relays at Buchanan High School, where she will again take the line in the 800 meters on the State Meet track at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
So far this spring season, Sadie has dropped national-leading times for 1600m (4:39.11), mile (4:41.06), and 3200m (9:51.49).
While Engelhardt is the obvious headliner here, she is not the only 2022 State Meet champion or medalist in what is a deep field of Golden State representation from SoCal, the Bay Area, and the Sacramento region, competing against a who's-who from the Central Section.
Defending State Meet champions scheduled here are Sydnie Vanek of Clovis (CS), who won the long jump, Nailea Fields of Caruthers (CS), who won the discus throw (and placed eighth in the shot put), and Chris Caudillo of Clovis (CS), who won the 1600 meters (and placed third in the 3200m). All three are seniors. There are 15 others scheduled to compete at WCR who were State Meet finalists in '22.
The meet, which begins at 10 a.m. with track events scheduled for first gun at 10:30 a.m., is structured with Bronze, Silver, and Gold divisions for most events, with the Gold sections being the elite athletes.
Here's an event-by-event look at Saturday's West Coast Relays
BOYS
Sprints
Nickolas Miller of Clovis North (pictured), Imari Conley of Central, Ian Dossman of Franklin - Elk Grove (SJ), and Bryce Thomas of Moreau Catholic (NC) are all sub-21.5 in an almost all-senior field for the 200m Gold Division race. Miller and Conley will battle in the 100m with Edison (SJ) senior Ah'Marion Ashley (10.61) and Buchanan senior Augustus Remlinger (10.63). Seniors Robert Stitts of El Cerrito (NC), Tramayne Shivers of Pittsburg (NC), and Nate Frazier of Mater Dei (SS) are looking to dip under 10.7s.
Moreau Catholic 's Thomas, a State finalist last May, leads the 400m field with a entry mark of 48.23 with Liberty (CS) senior Ethan Mahanke right there at 48.30.
Hurdles
Merrill West (SJ) junior Cameron Williams has run 14.64 in the 110m hurdles and appears to be the class of this field. Bullard senior Kyle Hughes, Mater Dei senior Isley Gutierrez have also run sub-15s. Williams at 40.62 is among five sub-41 boys in the 300mH race where Carson (LA) freshman Jayden Rendon (39.07), Buchanan senior Augustus Remlinger (39.57), Central (CS) junior Noel Felix (39.65), and Sanger (CS) senior Han Yotoun (40.67) are the favorites.
Distances
One of the marquee races on the track will be the 800m with deep field led by Noah Ray and Zach Weaver of Buchanan, Anthony Fast Horse of Ventura (SS), and Isaac Chavez of Madera South (CS).
Caudillo and Ray each bring sub 4:10-credentials into the 1600m field that includes Weaver, and Quinn White of San Luis Obispo (CS).
Relays
Central was the class of the state last May, winning the 4x1 and placing second in the 4x4 at the State Meet. But the bulk of that team graduated, now giving everyone else a chance. Liberty - Bakersfield (CS) is looking to throw down early Central Section gauntlet coming in with a 3:21.19 best, some five seconds faster than the next two fastest entries, Buchanan and Pittsburg (NC).
A field of 23 teams will take the line in the 4x800m, the new addition to the State Meet schedule figures to be a season-long trial-and-error as programs sort out both athlete and team strategy for the post-season. Buchanan with a best of7:59.98, Ventura (SS) with a best of 8:00.00, and Madera South (CS) at 8:01.00 lead the field. Outstanding junior Anthony Fast Horse, is among the relay pool for Ventura. As is Caudillo for Clovis.
Pittsburg (41.75), Liberty - Bakersfield (41.76), Central (41.82), Mater Dei (41.82) and El Cerrito (41.90) all come in with sub-42 credentials in the 4x1.
FIELD EVENTS
Jumps
Returning State Meet runner-up Hilton Green, a senior at Buchanan, leads the pole vault field with an entry mark of 16-5. Turlock (SJ) junior Max McFarlane has cleared 15-7. Green, who is pictured, is an Oklahome recruit who was the State Meet runner-up last spring.
Mater Dei (SS) sophomore Brandon Gorski is perhaps the most versatile jumper in the state with a 6-8 best in the high jump and 22-10.50 reach in the long. Juniors Braylon Noble of Soquel (CC) and Dwayne Noel of Livermore (NC) have both cleared 6-6 in the high jump, and versatile De La Salle (NC) senior Chukwunonso Udeh has a season best of 6-5.
Tennyson (NC) senior Taeshaun Lyons (22-11.25) and Clovis North (CS) senior Nickolas Miller (22-9) are the leading qualifiers along with Gorski in the long jump.
South Bakersfield (CS) senior Shane Carr (46-8) and Central (CS) junior Samuel Agbakoba (46-3.25) are the only two 46-plus entries in the triple jump.
Throws
Three of the top combo throwers in California are slated to compete here with Redondo Union (SS) senior Kai Deines leading the discus group at 198-11 but not far behind are a pair of underclass league rivals in Clovis North (CS) sophomore McKay Madsen (181-5), and Buchanan junior Derek Smith (171-11). Deines also has the top shot put entire at 63-5.25 with Madsen next at 57-9, his junior teammate Brayden Bitter at 56-5, and Smith at 56-4.
GIRLS
Distances
The lineup scheduled to challenge Engelhardt and her 2:05.66 credentials in the 800m include Buchanan soph Elliana Lomeli (2:11.95), senior Grace Hutchison (2:12.25), soph Sierra Cornett (2:14.73) and Clovis East senior Erika Nyberg, among a deep field looking to chase Engelhardt to a PR.
Hutchison (pictured), headed to BYU in the fall, was sixth at State as a junior in the 1600m. She leads that field here, which is a who's-who of the Central Section, including Buchanan senior Sydney Sundgren, and sophomores Cornett and Lomeil, battling Highland (CS) junior Mia Torrecillas, Nyberg, Clovis West freshman Cameron Macias, Clovis North senior Ashlyn Leath, along with the Campollndo (NC) duo of Ellie Buckley and Shea Volkmer, and Archbishop Mitty (CC) soph Evie Marheineke.
The 3200m field includes four with sub-11 credentials led by Champs National Cross Country Championships qualifier Leath, who comes in with a best of 10:33.47. Torrecillas has run 10:35.45, and Marheineke has an entry best of 10:40.56.
Sprints
Dublin (NC) senior Leila Champion (24.74) and Clovis East (CS) sophomore Haley Duvall (24.75) are the leaders in the 200m lineup that also includes field event stars Jordan Leveque of Buchanan and Sydnie Vanek of Clovis, with Carson senior Samira Stevenson coming in with the No. 3 qualifying mark. The 100m field is similar with Champion (12.01), Edison (SJ) senior Sakai Johnson (12.03), Stevenson (12.07) and Righetti (CS) junior Riley Allen (12.09) all on the cusp of dipping under 12 seconds.
Clovis North sophomore Emerson Parks has the top entry time in the 400 at 57.21 with Turlock (SJ) junior Olivia Walker, Mitty senior Alice Tsioutsioulikli (57.66), and Clovis North junior Maya Cordoba (57.69) all with sub-58 credentials.
Hurdles
Milani Ward (Clovis East) at 44.45, Bella Turner (Liberty-Bakersfield) at 44.77 are the two sub-45 girls in this field with senior Mari Testa (Campolindo) and Central senior Taleeah Hoggatt coming in at 45.8s.Testa leads the entries in the 100mH event at 14.50, with Costales (14.57), Hoggatt (14.72), and Ward (14.86) all with sub-15 entry times.
Relays
A season removed from longtime sprint star Takiya Cenci, Clovis North still comes in as the team to beat, with a nearly-six second gap on the other top teams.
State Cross Country divisional champions Buchanan and Campolindo among the 21 who will take the line in the 4x800m relay. Buchanan's lineup is the who's-who of the Bears' CIF-State and No, 3 nationally ranked cross country team. Campo's A team is led by cross county standouts Buckley (Boston College recruit), and Volkmer.
The 4x1 should be tight with Pittsburg (48.82), Carson (48.85) and Frontier (48.87) all sub-49 and Edison (40.00) and Clovis North (49.03) on the cusp.
