MILESPLIT Junior Boys All-CA Track and Field Team

JUNIOR BOYS ALL-CA TRACK AND FIELD TEAM

* * *

CONGRATULATIONS to these outstanding track and field athletes in the Class of 2023 who have been selected as the best in their class in CA from the 2022 outdoor season.

The All-State MileSplit Junior Boys All-CA Track and Field Team was selected based primarily but not exclusively on athletes who rank among the top of their class in the U.S. and excelled at the State Meet.

These teams are selected by the editor and are subjective.

Marks are based on the MileSplit database. Stronger consideration is given to marks achieved at CIF and top invitationals over league meets and duals. Consistency at a high level was a factor in the determination between first- and second-team selections.

In selecting this team, every attempt is made to represent all 14 individual events and as many of the 10 CIF sections as makes sense based on athlete performances within the class.

The boys class of 2023 is special. There were 39 athletes in this class that earned 44 spots at the CIF-State Track and Field Championship finals. This group captured five individual State Meet titles by four boys. This class also earned 28 State Meet medals (top-six finish).

And consider that two of the top distance runners in CA history, twins Leo and Lex Young, did not participate in the CIF post-season.

The Young twins, along with Newbury Park classmate Aaron Sahlman, and Christopher Caudillo of Clovis ranked among the top eight runners in the U.S. for 1600m, and the Youngs and Caudillo ranked as three of the top six nationally for 3200m, with Sahlman slotting 12th.

The high-end depth of this class made for challenging decisions as to cutting to a final 20-member first team. We added a second-team list here to recognize athletes who medaled at State and/or ranked among the top of the class. None of the four previous MileSplit All-State teams we have posted to this point had the depth warranting an extension beyond the first team.
